Okay nautical-know-it-alls.. white over red over white over white over green. What is it?

The white over red is the other boat behind........

That's the international lighting pattern for "I've been fishing so long that I got drunk and fell against the switch panel".

Nothing is "over" the green, that's a starboard green light not on the mast. The white-white-red-white on the mast doesn't match anything in ColRegs, since the top and bottom white are pretty obviously lower intensity, I'm guessing they are incorrectly turned on, or deck lights.

Which leaves a standard "Vessel engaged in fishing, other than trawling" per Int'l Rule 26C. Just missing his white stern light.

I would say it's an incorrect display on a fishing boat (looks like a 58' limit seiner?). He has the red over white that would be a fishing vessel (other than trawling) making way and you are seeing his stb. sidelight. He must be running a mast head white all around even though he shouldn't be or maybe it's a forward sodium light that we can only see a little bit of?

"sodium light " Bingo! Those sodium lights often take time to warm up and cool down, and they are dim for part of that process. Or, if there's a problem with the power supply to them, they could be dim. Either way would explain it.

Your photo is not available.....

White over Red = pilot boat.
White over white mast head = Tow 200 meters or less
Green = stbd Nav light.
So you have a pilot boat towing someone who broke down out near the pilot station and you are on his stbd side.

Red over white = Fishing at night
Green over white = Trawling at night
Those of you who are Trolling, you are just an ordinary Power Driven vessel and have to abide by the rules as a Power Driven vessel.
