You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

My girlfriend was on the rescue boat at that race. First of all there were two boats that turtled roughly at the same time. For both boats, it wasn't the first time they turtled a boat or lost control. Both skippers didn't reduce sail area when the wind piped up. Both skippers had a habit of not and the results happened. The one boat that got all the press almost lost a life. In the end was it worth it? The answer was no. Last Volvo race cost a sailor his life in the middle of the Atlantic and the boat as well. Was it worth it? No. As far was the experience of the female sailors according to my girl friend, many people will not sail with her because of her seamanship. So I guess there are always two sides to a view. Racers push the envelop of the boats all the time. Most of the time it works out for them. Sometimes I am not sure it all worth it with accidents like this one.

zaliasvejas is on a distinguished road
I have raced in boats like this...where winning is everything! How pointless! There seems to be a blatant culture of "fast", anything goes and whatever it takes to win. Funny, it is as if they are racing around the parking lot or the lawn. Racers are so in tune to each other and the other competitors that they ignore the water completely! Water has a way of reminding us it is there... It is cold, wet and deadly... Honestly, ocean is the scariest place to be... when you think of it. It can turn nasty in a second, at any one moment you are about 5 minutes away from death...
I do not forget that, ever... I am still alive!
That is why I love sailing and the ocean! It reminds me that I am quite expendable and in the end, I am but an insignificant bubble on it's surface.
(So are my troubles, he, he...)

It happens every year with that race, somebody does something stupid. One year, I believe it was Alchemy or Wizard something, cut too close to Anacapa Island and ripped out the bottom. It's not always reported, they are SB Yacht Club after all.
