Sight reduction guide

Guys,

When I started doing sight reductions to derive a position line I always had a little trouble getting all the steps in the right order and I could never find a comprehensive handy guide to ease the process.

Now that I have others on my boat who are interested in the process of celestial navigation, I decided to derive my own guide to help the learners to get started. I thought it would be nice to share it with those that have an interest.

This is not intended to be a lesson in celestial navigation and makes the assumption that the user understands the fundamentals and just needs a guide to get it all right. If you don't understand the steps described then you probably need a little tuition first.
  • Page 1 is where the info for the sight reduction is gathered and the calcs done.
  • Page 2 is a step by step process on how to use Page 1.
  • Page 3 is how the plot is derived once the sight reduction has been achieved.
  • Page 4 is a plotting sheet
  • Page 5 is for a meridian passage (noon sight) and has imbedded instructions.
This is what the first page looks like.

Unfortunately the document is a Word file which I cannot attach in this forum. If you want to have a look at the whole thing, give me an e-mail address and I'll send you a copy.

I don't profess to be a celestial navigation guru and there may be errors so if any user sees something that is incorrect or could be improved, please share it with us.

Hope you find this useful

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

I have a nice Sight Solver produced by Weems & Plath. Circa 1974
H.O. 229 reduction on one side and the other side has; Meridian Transit, Lat by Polaris, and an Azimuth Angle plotter.
Really is nice, in that it is a good reminder on all of the steps required in doing a sun line or a round of stars.
