New ( ? ) idea on anchoring

The idea of the Sentinals on the anchor chain ahead of the anchor was to keep the pull on the rode more horizontal, thereby in effect, increasing scope for a given amount of rode. Using multiple Sentinals allowed someone without the arm strength of Arnie Swartzenegger to handle the weights more easily. This weight reduction is not available to the person with a heavey length of chain or a heavier anchor. It gives you more options. The idea was to use the weights in only certain storm situations, giving a better holding assurance for a certain size anchor.Of course you should have more than one anchor weight and type, I just think that this idea would give you more options. Just out of curiosity, has anyone out there ever made their own anchor?

All that stuff on your anchor rode would be a real liability if you had to pull up in a hurry say in case of your boat dragged or someone was dragging down on you in the middle of the night. An all chain rode with a windlass accomplishes the goal much more effectively with out the the complications.

Trying to skimp on ground tackle is like skimping on the brakes on your car. You wouldn''t do that would you? Good ground tackle is essential safety equipment for your boat and yourself. Why not just do it right.

Angels or sentinals don''t provide much help. Lead is much denser than concrete. The number of concrete bottles required would be very unhandy.

New ( ? ) idea on anchoring

I have tried the anitfreeze bottle of concrete. It weighs about 23 pounds. I use it occasionally especially if I have out a lot of scope and there are other boats in the area that might run over my rode. It works pretty good. I just tie it onto my rode from the dingy after I set the anchor. I''m sure it helps increase the holding power however I still put out scope as if I didn''t have it.

I use 20 ft of chain and rope. I tie it to the rope part to hold it down so boats coming close will not cut my rode. As far as extra holding power I don''t know but I suppose it helps. Can''t hurt.
