Wagner is great up to about 40 knots or so. At 50 knots, the wind is shreiking so loud through the shrouds you can't hear the stereo - at 60 knots, you can barely hear yourself think - and maybe that's good.
On one Transatlantic race the sky was the appropriate hue and the waves properly large so the on watch, myself included, began to sing the "ride of the Valkyries", or rather, dum-de-dum it, cuz no one knew much German in the crowd. Finally a bucket of water came from the companionway, along with a reminder, filled with short Anglo Saxon words, that there were four people trying to sleep below. I can never go through rough weather now without having that melody run through my mind.

IIRC, regardless of personal dependency issues, the two dudes who totally flipped out and 'jumped the shark' had consumed copious amounts of seawater.

Those sailors who take part in those extreme races, especially the one that is a single-handed race around the southern ocean, are CRAZY! I can only hope that in my future I will get to experience the southern ocean first hand. More than that though, I hope if I should find myself in those tumultuous seas I wont be riding six story swells.
Seriously the southern ocean is like the place your parents warned you not to go growing up because it would only lead to trouble. The names alone inspire fear. Roaring forties? Furious fifties? SCREAMING sixties? Storms that travel unchecked and unmolested by land. Ice bergs, frigid temperatures and gales as common as the Albatrosses that provide you with your sole companionship. To be so far out from any land that rescue is impossible is as scary as it gets. If you run into trouble, you better hope another boat is close by and even then? Odds are not good. Sorry for the tangent

Anyone who will do something that scares the **** out of me is Crazy. But then again, maybe I'm just not competent to do what they do?
