Ok, I admit this is that same old gripe. But what else could I have done?
Motoring back in from the bay on Sunday, through a twisty channel near where I have run aground a couple of times previously, I was definitely staying close to the green buoy to make sure I had water beneath me. Going into that turn, I thought I had plenty of time to clear it and then move back to "My" side of the channel, but some hot sh_t 40 footer stinkpot just came barrelling at me at full throttle. He managed to squeeze between me and the buoy without slowing down and glared at me for hogging the road. I suppose my punishment was dealing with his wake.
(I deferred from offering him the appropriate hand signal).
So I guess I'd like to know should I have done something different? (Other than giving him the hand signal).

It's pointless to get upset. I had 2 BIG displacment hull types making 4ft or higher wakes pass on my port side.. It seems most just think they are driving cars and have to stay on the right. and sailboat = go in front to show them who's boss.

We have the same issue here in Boot Key Harbor. The one side of the channel is shoaling and so with my 6' draft I like to hang to the deeper side.

The best thing to do would be to hail the other boat on the VHF, but not everybody listens. So a lot of times, I will make a slight fast turn to port and then back again hoping that the other guy gets my intentions.

They should have slowed down for you. I have had times though when they slow down too late and make even a bigger wake than if they would have just kept going.

Bruce...

I always think of sound signals in terms of what MY intentions are:
One short blast means I intend to steer to starboard
Two short blasts means I intend to steer to port.

the only signal he will get is the 'Youre number one' sign... the only guy i ever hear on the VHF is the USCG aux commadore calling for his peeps. ive never heard one respond.
