I also find that a little more thinking is required when jibing or attempting to not jib than with tacking or attempting to not tack especially in really light air when you don't have the tactile help from wind you can feel.

As far as spinning the winch idea, I'm sure it is a good trick for some people some of the time and I will certainly mention it if I'm teaching someone who has trouble remembering. I'm pretty convinced I wouldn't do it while racing unless the boat or crew stinks and I don't want to be invited again.

The subject is interesting because it shows that even experienced people can become disoriented and do things backwards.

I also can't imagine having to spin the winch before wrapping the sheet. It's like tightening a screw, I don't have to stop and think "which way is clockwise?" before twisting the screwdriver. But having sailed with a friend recently who did have troubles, this could have been a good trick to help her out.

Yes, whatever helps a new sailor remember is always useful.
I still remember the old ...righty tighty, lefty loosey...

And, I wonder what will replace..." clockwise" as an instruction ..in the digital age..maybe it is......" Spin the winch" or " Righty Tighty" works for winches too....
