Safe angle of heel

We've had the rail in the water several times. I think much of it is why she's on her ear. One time, racing, in 30 kts gusting to 35, four crew, the #3 (jib) and a reef in the main, the rail was often in the water and it was all my wife could do to keep her on our tack and heading. Conversely, in 15 kt winds, just the two of us, flying the #1 (150% genoa) and a full main, both my wife and the boat were comfortable with the rail in the water.

For my boat, 7 degrees is my optimum point - 10 degrees if I'm pushing it, and at 18 degrees one of the hulls is out of the water. Contrary to popular belief it always heels a little, and since the leeward hull has the centerboard down this is a good thing as the boards are placed asymmetrically, more lift on the leeward side as it's outboard.


Every boat is different you see: Also, I find that at 10 degrees cup holders might be needed.
