best way to reef a main

I just bought a Catalina 38 1979 it has Lee sails. I sailed her from Tampa back here to New Orleans by my self and I put the first reef in at the dock. The loose footed main was kind of a bugger to get pulled down tight but I managed to get it. The boat also has a Dutchman and I see no real benifit from it then maybe it isent set up quite right. I find myself fighting the vertical flaking lines to get the sail to lay nice and flat on the boom.I will also be adding a little bit longer tie downs for the reefs as it can be a chore if short handed to get the reef in if it is really blowing. I was not worried about speed so I did a large circle and as she came up on the wind I reefed down.
