stuck under the dock

Being a small lake day-sailor, I had not had much experience docking prior to delivering my Bristol 27 from Chicago to Milwaukee. We stopped for one night at a marina and had trouble finding a safe way to keep the boat from being scrunched under the dock. Lake Michigan water has been a bit low, and the B27 has low freeboard. How do I tie off, but keep the deck from being smashed under the dock boards? (our solution that night was to tie another line to a perpendicular dock that kept the boat from going under the dock)

Kedge anchor, (med moor style), or tie lines to an opposing dock. Those are the only ways I know of. I have to do that with my boat during the winter do to extreme tidal range.
