I've been working on my
dinghy handling skills that last couple of weekends after having been a dock guy for many years.
One thing I noticed is that my
dinghy a pilot sailing
dinghy (Picture is a sister ship) will ship water over the stern when approaching the beach if even very small waves are running.
What I noticed worked well was that I turned the boat around at the last minute and backed it up to the beach. Then that last wave just lifts the boat and sets it on the beach for me and no water gets in.
I also found an excellent little beach dolly. It looks just like a road trailer for a small powerboat but small and with balloon tires. It even has a little
winch on the front of it. It works great to get the Pilot up off the beach to the grass by hand
I made a two step
ladder I hang off the
jib cleat that makes it easier to get from the
dinghy to the boat. Getting off, it seems best to just sit on the Catalina 25 gunnel and hop into the pilot, aiming for the middle.
That is all I've got so far in a weeks worth of practice.
Anyone have any hard won dinghy advice besides getting a more stable dinghy.
