Re: 49 knots is "Locally fresh trades"?

I was out there too. Any chance the wind instrument was way out of calibration? Did you see other boats out there with sails up? I'm not doubting that a wind instrument on the boat your were on...

Re: Boat Shoes

I own Fila Skeletoes, similar to your Vibrams, and wear them when racing. The traction is amazing and you can feel everything. Far more grip than barefoot or any other shoe I've every worn on a...

Re: A Couple of Yanmar 2QM15 issues

A couple of thoughts. Are you sure the alarm buzzer is actually from the alternator/charging and not from low oil pressure? A simple way to try and isolate would be to flip the decompression levers...

Re: best way to ship 55# foldable dinghy?

There are numerous USPS locations around St Thomas.

Maximum sizes are listed here https://www.usps.com/ship/preparing-domestic-shipments.htm I strongly doubt the dinghy can be packaged into a...

Re: best way to ship 55# foldable dinghy?

I would probably start by contacting these guys and explain what you are trying to do. STT Cargo (http://www.sttcargoshipservice.com/)

There is a place on the east end that can accept mail but I...

Re: Single handed sailing in BVI

I am familiar with many of the charter companies and don't know of any that would allow single handing. Most insurance companies don't like it and they drive many policies.

I also don't know of...

Some of the cats do have water makers and some do not. Not knowing which vessel you are considering, I would speak with Kirsten in reservations before booking. She will be able to confirm the...

Re: Single handed sailing in BVI

Zanshin, my suggestion for short painters works the same for the moorings that are passed by because they don't have a painter at all... I make a large loop, about 4' in diameter, with a line using...

Re: Single handed sailing in BVI

Picking up a mooring alone need not be an issue. There are probably as many ways to do it as there are people sailing. My employment causes me to move a variety of cats and monos from 31'-50' alone...

Re: Single handed sailing in BVI

If you do a search of Zanshin, he's a member here and on other forums. Zanshin has been single handing around the BVI-St Martin some 40ish foot boats and is currently on a 57'. Clearly it can be...

Re: Bet your Marina doesn't do this on Opening day!

My marina doesn't do that for opening day because it's open all year (technically it does close for named storms).

Quite an event!

Re: Sailing USVI/BVI from CYOA Yacht Charters

There are ample places to go around St John and St Thomas to spend a week or more for those that don't wish to enter the BVI. As mentioned previously, St John has numerous pristine beaches not...

Re: Buying batteries in Caribbean - where?

Why not just get the batteries at one of the Sam's Clubs on Puerto Rico and skip and the shipping and logistics?

Re: Buying batteries in Caribbean - where?

St Martin will probably be the least expensive but you did specifically ask about the USVI option. There is a Budget Marine here but the prices are always higher than the one in St Martin. The...

Re: Underwater Lights

There are underwater lights on many of the catamarans in the charter fleet where I work. They do attract fish like crazy in my area. The only negative I see, other than a very small hole in the...

Re: Abandoned sailboat transformed into floating pizzeria - Gizmag

With the BVI continuing to raise taxes and fees, many of us in the USVI have been visiting Christmas Cove and Water Island's beach bar more often. Having Pizza Pi there and the very good snorkeling...

I used Diego's as well and had a great experience. The sail cover arrived in about 7 days and fit perfectly. The price was very reasonable.
