I agree, you should never smell raw gas on a sailboat with a gas aux. engine. First place I would check are the fuel lines and connections. If the boat is older, the fuel lines in the olden days...

I am assuming that shore power is 30 Amp 110V AC with the standard 30 Amp 3 prong plug. If so, you can certainly get an adaptor that has a male 30A connector (which you''ll plug in to shore power)...
