Re: New suit of sails for PSC34

Yeah, Mack sails. I had them do a set of four sails on my last boat, and they just did a genoa for my current boat. Like the sail and the company was good to work with. Check out on their site how...

Re: Old but New

Welcome aboard Vinnie.

I'll go ahead and name a boat brand, just because you're probably at the point that you'd like to stop by a brokerage and do a little window shopping. And, a little...

Re: Would anybody be interested in an electric outboard like this?

Sure smells like BS to me.

If you have a propellor that's 30% more efficient, never mind your electric motor, I'll take one of your props right now.

If this isn't a scam, it certainly has...

Re: Advice for a starter.

If I understand correctly, you're planning to purchase your boat in the near future (after you've gained enough knowledge to do so intelligently).

---Boat large enough to live on
You'll find...

Re: Need help on masthead sheave replacement information

Sorry, can't lead you to the correct parts, but will mention that when I replaced the sheaves on my Catalina 28 I used plain bearings for the halyards that don't get used often, and used a ball...

Re: Sharks

I make a careful observation of the water before entering it, and take all the normal precautions. I'm also very careful to never leave Lake Michigan.

Re: What constitutes an 'experienced sailor'?

It's like pornography. You can't define it, but you know it when you see it.

Re: Tiller or Steering Wheel for Single-Handing

I sailed a Grampian 26 with a tiller for a little over a decade.

I had a wheel on my Catalina 309, and now I have a Catalina 28 with a wheel. On the 28, I'd be just as happy with a tiller.

Re: Couple builds boat and sails 15000 miles to Europe and back

Kind of weird, actually. Take ten years to build a sailboat, take it down the inter coastal to the keys, and sail to Portugal and Spain. Then, turn around a come back just to leave the boat parked...

Re: Looking for Winch Handles

There are plenty of winch handles free for the taking on the bottom of our lake.

Which is why I have my expensive, metal handle stored away on my Catalina 28, and use a cheap plastic one I got...

Re: Catalina 27 Seacock Replacement Advice.

-Yup, she has to come out of the water

-Yup, you should have gotten a survey

-and you should have seen that bad "seacock" even before a survey. There is at least one checklist on this forum...

Re: Cleaning icky bottom

Consider Mary Kate On and Off. Odd name, and it's not cheap, but it's a powerful acid that's intended for use on fiberglass and will not harm it. It could mess with your trailer, though, so it may...

Re: Off-season Boat Buying

I'm reminded of the Catalina 309 that I bought new in 2007. Wouldn't you think that Catalina would have an in mast curler that was reliable? That thing was a nightmare. The dealer made a couple...

Re: MaineSail's Boat vs. Your Boat

A "10" as defined by the original post, is MaineSail's boat. And, because few of us have actually seen it, it's based on how we IMAGINE his boat to be. ...

Re: Renewed interest

Those are both fine boats to start with. Perfectly good to keep, unless you get the urge to go larger.

Regarding the survey, I'd get one even if the boat is free. Maybe, especially if it's...

MaineSail's Boat vs. Your Boat

Okay, I've been a member of this forum long enough to have read plenty of MaineSail's posts, and I've used his advice for compounding & polish, batteries, mounting hardware, and more.

Choosing to be irrational if a valid choice. Best of luck.

Re: Steel boat care

As a new sailor, and particularly a sailor who anticipates extended cruising, with his family, you have a lot to learn.

I don't get the point of increasing the learning curve, and throwing...

Re: What happens when holding tank is full?

Yet another reason why, on my 28 Catalina that I use to daysail and make the occasional trip up Lake Michigan, the holding tank system was replaced with a porta-potti.

The Porta's not for...

Re: Where to go sailing to get away from the crowds?

Ditto on the Great Lakes. Sure, you can find a crowd if you want, and that's what a lot of people seem to want.

Around here, on Lake Michigan, as soon as you're a mile from a port, you're on...

Re: At what point can the seller just end a deal?

Not all deals go through.

I would not have the expectation that a seller is going to significantly re-negotiate the price if and when a survey describes defects. Not saying it isn't worth a shot,...

Some of my boats were kept for many years, others not. My current vessel, the...
