Re: Master Plan to Cruise and Pay For It

I know somebody who sails other peoples' boats - a LOT. Although his life seems to be fantasy-like, he still dreams of owning his own boat and taking it where and when he wants to go. I understand...

Re: Master Plan to Cruise and Pay For It

If all the concerns raised previously aren't enough to dissuade you, let's look at the most important aspect of your #6. You need to be able to answer these questions that all potential customers...

Re: Easier beach retrieval?

I caution against winching the boat up onto the trailer. Most sailboat trailers, including domromer's, have bunks, not rollers. The boweye is not secure enough to withstand the kind to forces needed...

Re: Estimate of people learning to sail on annual basis?

I did leave out a couple of details about my sailing history. My uncle had a daysailor at his summer cabin, but the kids never got to sail it. I guess we were too young. And my parents had friends...

Re: Estimate of people learning to sail on annual basis?

Hmmm...I learned how to sail Sunfish at BoyScout camp, and I loved it. However, through high school, early adulthood, and even early middle age I found that I enjoyed activities that old people can't...

Re: Washing life jackets

All my flotation devices get washed annually in my front-loading washing machine, gentle cycle. Works great. If you don't have such a machine, laundromats do.

Re: how to convert the naive and the unwilling?

I'm not saying this is wrong, but it would not have worked with any of the ten women I've cruised with. They were there to relax; sailing was just a glorified beach trip to them, although they all...

Re: how to convert the naive and the unwilling?

Upgrade to a catamaran. Try to get a friend or two of hers to share the charter. If she doesn't like sailing a cat in the BVI, give it up. Nothing wrong with a retirement house on a tropical island...

Re: First Charter- BVI, First time sailing a Cat, can't wait.

I 'liked' FarCry's #34 even though it is almost opposite of what I said in #8. It is good to be reminded that there are different truths for different people. I appreciate when people enlighten me to...

Re: First Charter- BVI, First time sailing a Cat, can't wait.

I, too, love to go to the market for provisioning; there's always stuff that I can't get at home. I once bought charcoal from an old woman in the market in St. Georges. It was the real deal, locally...

Re: First Charter- BVI, First time sailing a Cat, can't wait.

I brought a travel guitar a few times. It's small enough to be one of my carry-ons, so that was no problem. And there may even be plenty of room aboard the catamaran for two 3/4 guitars. But my...

Re: First Charter- BVI, First time sailing a Cat, can't wait.

The passport, the sport-utility sandals, and my own dive mask are the only things that must go with me. That's just me; the mask matters to me because I love snorkeling with a watertight mask more...

Re: Thieves suck!

I kill two birds with one stone with that strategy:

Everything that is one my boat that a thief might want goes home with me. Then, I leave my companionway open, a hatch slightly ajar, and a boom...

Re: First Charter- BVI, First time sailing a Cat, can't wait.

I grew up in the old tradition: Dad went to work. Mom stayed home and did all the housework. I know some people still live like that, so here's a recommendation for them:

Every year, we went on a...

Re: First Charter- BVI, First time sailing a Cat, can't wait.

You are worrying far too much about sailing a cat. Charter boats are designed to be easy for novices to sail. Do not get talked into hiring a captain; you do not need one. I've chartered several...

Re: Thieves suck!

This is the crux of the situation. Thievery will wither if there is no market for stolen goods. So, honest people should not buy anything that has a price that is too good to be true. If you are...

Re: Bareboat Charter this winter

I did a three-week charter in the Windward Islands: Grenada to St. Lucia round trip. On the return leg, we hit our favorite spots that we 'discovered' on the way up. We had a sporty overnight sail...

Re: outboard without reverse gear

I would avoid a motor without neutral. Beside the convenience that kwalktersmi discusses, the ability to pop in and out of gear is valuable in docking situations.

Also, at the end of the day, I...

Re: outboard without reverse gear

The motor on my 19' is a Suzuki 2.5. No reverse gear. It took me a day or two to get my brain to automatically spin the motor around when I need to back up or slow down. My boat is small enough that...

Re: Best book for self surveying?

IMO, it is worthwhile to own and read both Mustin's and Casey's books that were mentioned so far. The online sources referred to look good, too. You can't go wrong by reading as much as you can. Boat...

Re: Another noob- another raft of questions

In case you missed this part of azguy's post, I'll repeat it:

Think of it this way: Would you consider living in a house that you could buy for $10K? Maybe that's a bad analogy...how about a...

Re: Tanzer 22 for a first boat?

Re: Adding a Topping Lift

T.Bird - I'll tell you how my 19' boat is rigged and what I think of it, but I make no claim that is the best way. To give you an idea of my expertise, before reading this thread I had not considered...

Re: New to sailing instructional links

Sailing, like many acquired skills, is best learned incrementally. So, for many learners, videos are better than taking a class, assuming that the knowledge gained is practiced.

My experience...
