What kind of bottom? Mud or rocky? To me it looks like the chain is wearing again something likes rocks or coral. Just the outside edges of the links, the galvanized is worn off and steel is pitting....

If I am reading this correctly, you have no riser connected to the exhaust manifold? I made this same mistake when I replaced my exhaust system. Last year I added the riser and have not had an issue...

I would cut the studs off leaving a 1/4", then slowly drill a 1/4" pilot hole in the center...
