Re: Premature impeller failure cause

It looks like the larger crank mounted pump has put an end to my premature impeller failure issues. Boat was hauled last week. This is the first year since my repower with the Westerbeke 55 that I...

Re: Westerbeke W46 - "Early" vs "Late" model engines

Haven't been to their site in a while. i thought there was separate lists for different model versions when it mattered. You could call them direct or one of their distributors like Hanson Marine in...

Re: Westerbeke W46 - "Early" vs "Late" model engines

Westerbeke's website has information on its discontinued models, manuals , part lists, installation guides, etc. you should be able to get the information there.

Re: Methodology of Major Repairs

Think about the sequence of projects. In general structural and systems should be done before cosmetic. You wouldn't want to do an engine rebuild then have to remove the engine to replace a water...

Re: GPS Static on VHF

Thanks for the link. If the FI3 or F13 filter on the board if bad I guess it could be responsible for passing through some interference from the GPS. All they suggested when I called Icom a few weeks...

Re: GPS Static on VHF

Well the static does not appear to be coming from the power source as I hooked up the radio to a separate 12v battery and still got the static. I'm going to try to hook up a separate antenna to see...

Re: GPS Static on VHF

Nothing has really changed, no new equipment. Called Icom. They suggested testing with a handheld which I did but it was near the chartplotter. Maybe I'll try getting the handheld near the wiring.

GPS Static on VHF

Any ideas why a Garmin 3006 chartplotter would suddenly start causing static on an Icom M422 VHF? They both have been on the boat for roughly 7-8 years. Issue just appeared this season after launch....

Re: How far back do you tow dinghy?

All the comments should be qualified by the type of dinghy: hard or soft bottom inflatable, RIB, with or without motor. What will work with a RIB may not work with a hard dinghy or a soft bottom...

Re: SIRIUSXM satellite hardware question

I believe Sirus ready indicates that the radio will control a Sirus tuner. There may be a harness between the radio and the tuner. Shakespeare makes a couple of nice low profile marine satellite...

Re: Premature impeller failure cause

Don't think it is bad impeller batches. The impellers that failed were from multiple sources both Westerbeke and Johnson branded and bought over multiple years or provided by Westerbeke / Hansen...

PM me with your email address and I'll email you some pix. Might be quicker than me getting around to posting the pix here.

Re: Premature impeller failure cause

Fast forward to 2015. After another impeller failure in the summer of 2014 on my Westerbeke 55 I had enough of trying to investigate the cause of the annual failures. I bought a new pump, upgrading...

Re: Engine Compartment Fire Extinguisher

The auto system is probably Halatron, the replacement for the old Halon extinguishers. If you have a automatic system you should have an auto kill system as the running engine will suck Halatron into...

Re: How to charge a SEALED lead acid battery?

Check out the Battery Tender products the documentation indicates that the pannel can not be submerged but nothing about keeping it out of the elements.

Rather than thread the loop through the center of the cleat just drop it over the two horns of the cleat then close the loop by lashing a small line to prevent the loop from popping of when slack....

Re: Preventing chafe of rode on bow cleat...

A picture from a little more distance would provide a better idea of the direction of the loads on the cleat. Is that a mooring pennant attached to the cleat using an eye at the end of the pennant?...

Re: What is the life span of a chart plotter???

When did Garmin come out with the GPS 12? 20 years back? That was my first GPS and bought five others, GPSmap 12, GPSmap 76, GPSmap 478, GPSmap 3006 and an Oregon 200c. Sold the GPSmap 76 a 2-3 years...

Re: How frequently Do You Change Your Raw Water Impeller?

Agree 100%. Your can't really inspect it properly without pulling it out of the pump. Makes no sense t o me to risk the damage of overheating the engine for the cost of an impeler once a year.

What has been tried to clean it? I'd try a variety of different cleaners before painting or anything drastic. Good old cleanser, Clorox cleaner, Soft Scrub, trisodium phosphate, the mild acid that's...

Re: Westerbeke 40, ideal consumption efficienty

On a windless day with glass for water and no current chart you boat speed (I'd use both the knot meter and GPS) at 50 or 100 RPM increments. At the point where your speed starts to...
