If you do stick with gas a 2hp motor should be more than enough. Keeping it small will prevent it from changing the boat's balance too much.

A paddle is the cheap and reliable solution.

Yeah, it's just a thought, we have a bunch of 16' sailboats up at the lake for rent and they all have trolling motors. It's enough to get you out in the wind and to maneuver around in the back coves...

Ah, the venerable Merc!!! Many of us in Boston grew up with them at Community Boating Inc. on the Charles River.

I'd think 3-4 hp would be more than plenty, the Mercs are kind of heavy but heck,...
