Re: Whisker pole?

Sorry, I think that's a bad idea... And frankly, I don't see how it's possible on anything but smaller boats, in the most benign conditions...

Well, I just watched the first couple of...

Re: Which ones have ship wheel/helm and no tiller?

Well, what they're really meant to do, is simply to look beautiful sitting at a dock or mooring in front of a waterfront estate... :-)

But, yes - these boats really are all about the sailing. ...

Re: Which ones have ship wheel/helm and no tiller?

Yeah, that would grow old pretty quickly, trying to stay perched atop that little box in a seaway, while fighting the wheel using arms and shoulders alone... :-)

One thing I'm seeing more and more...

Re: Which ones have ship wheel/helm and no tiller?

The Allied Seawind strikes me as the only one that might have been equipped with a wheel as standard...

There's a good reason for that, I can't imagine how a wheel would be an improvement over a...

Re: Funding retirement boat

Damn, and I was starting to think I was the ONLY person out there who thought like you, and Greg... :-)

Admittedly, my attitude is perhaps a bit more colored than most, by the simple fact that I...

Re: When Do You Reef?

That's a very nice selection, but I think you need at least one more by Don Casey...

Really a pity that this one never gained the wider readership it deserved...

Sensible Cruising: The Thoreau...

Re: Hopes and dreams. Is this realistic?

Well, except for the sailing, and cruising... :-)

CRUISING CALIFORNIA would have to be one of the briefest cruising guides ever written. On other place in America has so many miles of coastline,...

Re: generator a good idea?

No, you don't... and, you already have the means to "make electricity", it's called your engine... :-)

I'd suggest holding off on getting a Honda, until you actually feel the NEED to have one... I...

Re: New or Old?

A budget is of primary importance, alright, and you're certainly on the right track to apply it as your starting point... Never ceases to amaze, how many of these "Best Bluewater Boats for a...

Re: Voyaging on $500 per month

Well, that was my point... He hasn't gone anywhere yet, but his budget has now been ratcheted up to $700/month... :-)

Probably just me, but I've always been wary of such "pre-announcements" with...

Re: Arthur

I prefer to cross from Nantucket Sound, heading out thru Pollock Rip or Great Round Shoal Channel...

Thanks, I came thru OK, but it was a long night, and a bit more 'interesting' than I was...

Re: Malo 45' loses rudder, pulls an All is Lost

The owner of a Malo 41 has chimed in over on CSBB...

Interesting...

Hadn't heard about it, quite a story, I can add to speculation...

Re: high wind gybing technique??

It can sometimes get a bit more complicated in large seas, and sheeting in tight isn't always the best option. When the seas are running large enough, you'll likely want to jibe down in the troughs,...

Re: Orange oil and bees wax for teak

"Oiling", "Sealing" or applying any teak "Treatment" to teak decks is one of the dumbest things a boatowner can do... :-)

Don't take my word for it, take Rebecca Wittman's ...

Re: Jacklines - where to run them?

Yeah, but that's because Evans is an experienced voyager more inclined to focus on Prevention, rather than a Cure that can be purchased at West Marine... :-)

Re: Help me plan my cruise North!

I'd leave the jerry cans behind, if I were you...

Very little good comes of carrying diesel fuel on deck, especially on a trip where it's not necessary to do so...

Re: Help me plan my cruise North!

Hmmm, I'm not sure the Labrador Current has much effect on that route :-) I've never noticed it, at any rate...

Re: Mooring Line

I'd second someone's earlier recommendation of the Yale Polydyne pennant. I use one in 1/2" as my anchor snubber, and a pair of 5/8" as my bridle for a drogue. West Marine does sell a comparable...

Re: Help me plan my cruise North!

Gotta agree with Dave on this one... Given your time frame, I'd suggest setting your sights on Block I and Newport as being about as far as you're gonna get, comfortably... And even then, you'll be...
