Re: battery availability at sam's club

I bought a deep cycle marine wet-cell battery at Costco for around $100. It seems to work perfectly well, although I often wish it had a pretty graphic of a sailboat on it, so I could be assured it...

Re: Want Mature Cook/Crew/Friend Lady

Plus, the OP is looking for a mature woman, not the usual suspects' request for a mid-20s, lithe, tan, blonde, supple, mute female contortionist, who is openmided, adventurous and free wheeling, on...

Re: Duck/Corrola, NC

My wife and I rented a place in Duck the last time I went to the Outer Banks. We drove north and saw the wild ponies once. We ended up spending most of our time in the Nags Head area, where I have...

Re: Installed and tested second automatic bilge pump

The Manual setting on the 3 way switch bypasses the automatic sensor or float switch and turns the pump on, regardless of whether there is water in the bilge.

Re: My Horror Story

Oh and BTW, I ran aground 3 times last year, screwed-up a number of times, was scared, tried not to panic at times, solved problems as best I could, learned a lot, and managed to survive for another...

Re: My Horror Story

Hey, you are fine, you are learning the hard way.

As I have stated several times, the success of a voyage is 80% skipper and 20% vessel. The ability of the skipper is 80% common sense, problem...

Re: Pearson 26 mast support

O.K., now I remember the wooden cross member. I would drop the mast, replace the wooden support, add fiberglass to it to strengthen it, and prevent further water ingress. You might want to check...

Re: Installed and tested second automatic bilge pump

I wanted to be able to test the pump without putting water in the bilge. With the manual switch, I can test it.

My other automatic bilge pump was wired through the main switch panel. I...

Re: Pearson 26 mast support

The Pearson 26 mast is decked stepped, with a compression post directly underneath the mast, not on either side. I seem to remember there was an accordian-style folding door as original equipment,...

It is not secured. Should it be? It seems to work fine as is.

Re: Leave up the Jib?

The safe answer is to drop all sails so your vessel will not be overwhelmed, turn on the engine and engage the autopilot (if it is not already on), put on your foul weather gear, batten the hatches...

Installed and tested second automatic bilge pump

Yesterday, I finished the installation and testing of a second automatic bilge pump.

The expertise of members of Sailnet (like Mainesail) has been a good influence on me: I used a heat gun to seal...

Re: help with a new potential sailor

There was an interested story about a blind sailor who set off to cross the Atlantic starting in the Chesapeake Bay area on an Olson 30. I can't remember his name. After leaving Cape May, N.J., his...

Re: Pearson 39 Yawl or not?

My first point was merely that Bill Shaw was a preeminent and successful yacht designer in his time, just as Bob Perry, William Lapworth, Phil Rhodes, Bill Lee, Rod Johnstone, and a number of other...

Re: Slooowwww Market

Your observations are correct. You might try listing it on eBay with a fairly high reserve price, just for the additional exposure. There are some more expensive sailboats there now.

Re: Pearson 39 Yawl or not?

Say what you will, Pearson was the most successful production boat builder of that era, which was the heyday of sailing, and Bill Shaw was its chief naval architect.

His designs are still special...

Re: Where are the younger people?

Based on my observations, every since the '70s, sailing has been a dying sport/activity. Many of us who own boats are older, and grew up during the heyday of sailing. Sailing does not have great...

Re: Help pinpointing a leak

It is all too easy to lose perspective and overreact after taking possession of a new-to-you boat. Install your automatic bilge pump ASAP and determine the source of the leak.

Lots of small bits...
