Re: Who is divorced because of sailing?

My wife has done a bit of a turn-around.

When I bought the boat last fall I remember struggling in our narrow alley to get it backed into the parking spot beside the garage. She sat looking out...

Re: Notes on a thru-hull replacement

Maybe if I got five or six people to stand right at the back of the boat it might pull the hose below the waterline. It's centerline, so heel wouldn't do it.

But you're right, I'd hate for it to...

Re: Don't have to be rich to sail

Fortunately they're putting some really good beers in cans these days :)

Re: Notes on a thru-hull replacement

Follow up:

The thru-hull is water-tight and my patch over the old thru-hull is water-tight and everything is hunky dory.

I still have on the reinforced hose I bought at Home Depot. It wouldn't...

Re: Don't have to be rich to sail

I've spent more on my boat than my house, if you don't count property tax. I have a 3 bedroom house, and only a 22' boat, and the boat still costs more!

(To be fair, everything in the house is...

Re: The trend in new cruising boats....

This May I chartered a 39' Jeanneau that had the dual wheels. I kind of liked it. It was easy to get way over to see the jib and still keep a hand on the wheel, or even fiddle with the jib sheet with...

Re: Zen and the art of 'bottom feeding'... please contribute!

It's not exactly boat-related, but Farm Show magazine has all sorts of articles about re-powering tractors, making your own tractors, fabricating odd devices from scrap.

I've never lived on a farm...

Re: Vang line slipping in cleat

Update:

I took the cam cleat apart and cleaned everything up and lubricated it well. It was bent slightly concave (pulling the teeth apart) so I cheated it and bent it slightly convex.

The...

Re: Installing Stereo in my H23

I bought one of these for my 22' boat. It's inexpensive and sounds good. It's portable so if you want music in the cockpit you put it in the cockpit, if you want music in the cabin put it in the...

Re: Music Etiquette at the Dock

That'd be a sight!

It is surprising how well sound can carry over water. I remember once coming into an anchorage in the late afternoon. As the skipper motored around scouting for an anchoring...

Re: Music Etiquette at the Dock

I realize this is getting off the topic of music at the dock, but I just want to defend Ryobi. I realize it ain't Milwaukee, but I've had good luck with Ryobi stuff.

I have a couple Ryobicordless...

Re: Catalina 275 sport

I'm guessing acre. That would be a lot of archers for one lake :)

Anyway, is that Leech Lake? How's the sailing there? I didn't know they raced up there.

Re: Do I need new sails

Why? Will his boat sink if he doesn't get new sails? Is he a danger to himself or others?

If he can get where he's going and is having fun getting there I'd say "need" is a bit of a strong word....

Re: 16 ft Snipe - How many people can it hold?

I'm in a group that has several Catalina Capri 16.5 sailboats that sail easily with four adults. In fact I did that very thing last night.

If you're only looking for three people a Capri 14.2...

Re: Vang line slipping in cleat

Word.

I use WD-40 to clean fingerprints off our stainless steel fridge, and that's it. I learned from bicycle maintenance that it's a massive crud-attractor. If I must use a spray lube I go with...

Re: Tiller or Wheel for Solo?

I have a Tiller Tamer which is kind of like a wheel brake. The tighter you turn the screw the more resistance it puts on the tiller. When I'm not using it the lines come right out so it's never in...

Re: Anchoring under sail

Thanks everyone!

Fortunately I'm on an underused lake, so I can practice things without having to worry about other boats too much. Saturday afternoon was great sailing, the airport reported 12...

Re: Vang line slipping in cleat

It does seem like the line is too small, but it's the same size as the line that was there before and that line worked fine. Maybe the old line was stiff and coarse from age.

I'm not on...

Re: Anchoring under sail

Right. Drop it from the cockpit. I don't know why I didn't think of that.

I learned anchoring on bigger boats with anchor lockers and windlasses, and I think I was just trying to re-create that.

Re: Anchoring under sail

What point of sail are out on? It seems like unless you're going mostly downwind this would set the anchor at a different angle than you'll be swinging, so it would have to re-set once you drop sails...

Anchoring under sail

I have a 22' boat on a small city lake that doesn't allow gas engines, so I use a trolling motor. I have a Danforth-style anchor stored in a cockpit locker. I don't even want to go over the clown...
