Re: Squeel while in gear

I'm not exactly sure. Things got a little crazy for a while, and I thrashed some not knowing what I was doing.

About $400 to get it hauled, launched, and power washed. About $360 for 24 days in...

Re: Squeel while in gear

I'm just following up here.

I pulled the boat and did the normal stuff while it was out, and fixed the problem described in this thread.

It was the cutlass bearing that was binding the prop...

Re: Interlux 2000E question

Thank you. I did indeed find the gallon jug to not be full.

Interlux 2000E question

The documentation on the Interlux site and the cans for 2000E both say to mix it in a 3:1 ratio. Yet, it comes packaged as 1 gallon of A and 1 quart of B, which is a 4:1 ratio.

What gives?

New cutlass bearing - indexing mark?

My new cutlass bearing has arrived, but before I installed it I wanted to ask you all about a curious mark on it. It looks like an indexing mark, or alignment mark, but I don't know what it should...

Re: Bottom sanding. Kill me now

It is a 27 foot Cal. I'm wearing a respirator.

VC17m is what I was planning on putting on, over 2000E.

Bottom sanding. Kill me now

I've started sanding the bottom. I've read the line that says, "If you don't know what the previous paint is and you're putting hard paint on now, sand to gelcoat".

Holy ****.

My boat had an...

Re: Shaft log? How's it disassemble?

Because it looks like it was right on the edge of the hose?

Re: Shaft log? How's it disassemble?

Looking for replacement parts, I see that pictured is the stuffing box. What the hell is a shaft log?

The other question about disassembly still stands.

Shaft log? How's it disassemble?

Is my vocabulary right? This is the shaft log? I've never been quite clear on that.

More importantly, now that I've got the prop shaft out, I'd like to replace that hose. How does it come...

Re: As long as the boat is out of the water . . .

Thanks for the replies so far.

It doesn't *sound* like a tremendous amount of time in terms of work. 8 hours to sand the bottom? Painting can be done in a day, from my reading. Cutlass bearing,...

As long as the boat is out of the water . . .

I'm sure there are other threads like this, and I apologize if I offend anyone for posting it again.

I've got to haul my boat (1983 Cal 27) for cutlass bearing replacement. I tried to do it in the...

Re: Squeel while in gear

Just following up . . .

I contracted a local fabricator to make a make-shift press and tried to press the cutlass bearing out in the water. That failed miserably, so I've negotiated with the...

Re: Half day in Daytona?

I did not. I called half a dozen marinas, I talked to several companies renting other kinds of boats, and I did a ton of internet searching. The general consensus that I found was "no one rents...

Half day in Daytona?

I'm going to spend a week in Daytona and would like to get a boat for half a day. All my googling leads me to jet skis, pontoons, and captained cruises. Does anyone know someplace I can call to...

Re: Squeel while in gear

Exactly. With the shaft unbolted from the transmission the prop is still very hard to turn. From under the boat I could only turn it a half-rotation at a time by grasping both blades of the prop...

Re: Squeel while in gear

I changed the transmission oil a week ago and what I took out of the transmission actually looked pretty good.

The prop is *hard* to turn. I cannot turn it by hand from inside the boat. I can...

Re: Squeel while in gear

I'm heading back to the boat today to do some more analysis. So, I'm re-reading the thread getting my ducks in a row.

I came across this quote. That water is coming in with the nut completely...

Re: Squeel while in gear

Thanks again, everyone.

I'll do the rest of this diagnostic work over the weekend and get an recording of the noise. I've ordered a laser tach. I may get one of those mechanics stethoscopes,...

Re: Squeel while in gear

Good ideas, Bristol. Thank you.

I've never been quite clear on how to check the shaft alignment. Can you point me to a good write up on that?

And, what do you mean by checking the motor...

Re: Squeel while in gear

I do have a strut between where the prop shaft exits the hull and rudder. This is where the cutlass bearing is.

The transmission is easy to shift when the prop shaft is disconnected.

I have...

Re: Squeel while in gear

I'm still thinking about this. Please forgive my frequent posts . . .

It seems to me that if the cutlass bearing were worn, and the shaft was disconnected from the transmission, that the prop...

Re: Squeel while in gear

Another question about this . . . could there be something in tube in the hull that the prop shaft passes through? Is there a bushing or something in there? Could something have gotten in there...
