Re: Destep or not Destep?

On a previous boat, I dropped the mast the first winter after I bought it, and I was glad I did! Turned out that under previous ownership someone had installed the forestay to the top of the mast...

Re: What to know about a raw water cooled Universal

Check for wobble in the raw-water-pump shaft.
That pump is a direct drive from a shaft internal to the engine. I had the seals go on a 23-year-old Universal M-12 diesel, and seawater got into the...

Question AM/FM with nonvolatile presets?

I'm loathe to hook up anything directly to the battery (except the bilge pump, of course). That includes the trickle to the radio that keeps alive the stations I've loaded into memory buttons.

Re: Theft-proofing your tender and outboard...

I hide one of these under the motor cowling and discretely clamp the leaf-spring door sensor under the engine's screw clamp. Try to dismount...

Re: Engine room cleanup - better way?

Once you get it clean, an epoxy barrier coat is a good idea.

Or you might try Interlux Bilgekote, available in white or grey. The paint worked well for me.

$854,400 in Fuel Spill Liability?

A quote from a Major marine insurer automatically includes coverage for claims for cleanup due to accidental discharge of oil or fuel. The insurer says that the $850+K coverage---over and above the...

Re: Defender Sale

Was there on Friday. Madhouse in the morning...tapered off a bit in the afternoon.
Was in the market for a dinghy and outboard. Bought a 10-ft. Zodiak and a 6-hp Tohatsu.

Thing is, my yacht club...

Re: bilge water

An added advantage of running a bilge pump into the cockpit: If your feet suddenly get wet, it's a dead giveaway that something needs attention.

Re: What to upgrade on these older electronics

I second Sabreman's suggestion.

DMI rebuilt the Datamarine depth gage on my Cat25, and I was very happy with the outcome.

Re: Fresh water for toilet

The culprit in the smell department isn't so much seawater in the holding tank but seawater (avec critters) sitting in the bowl and in the line going into the bowl. So flushing with fresh water will...

Re: Bought the boat! Location questions NJ/MD/NY

Despite what JimsCAL says above about crossing the Hudson, I've found that New York's City Island and New Rochelle and Larchmont/Mamaroneck draw a lot of New Jersey sailors who enjoy the (relatively...

Re: Mooring ball too close?

Many, if not most, mooring systems use a length of heavy chain attached to the mushroom or block, the end of which is then connected to the line that goes up to the mooring ball. The chain lies on...

Re: Adding automatic bilge pump to manual bilge pump

Plumb the second, automatic bilge pump to dump into your cockpit. Then let the scuppers handle the flow.

A sudden foot bath is better/simpler than a bilge alarm. Also, no need for another hole in...

Pigtail Bad

Our Catalina 25 originally was fitted with a pigtail, swaged to the backstay at the appropriate height and fitted with a swivel trigger snap that clipped to the boom. Nice and neat.

But the boat...

Best cruising? Southwest Florida

Just got back from an early-March bareboat charter out of Punta Gorda.
Charlotte Harbor is well-protected, when the wind pipes up. Go out into the Gulf when you want to.
Great sunsets.

Re: Universal M18 - stopping using throttle push back

Take a look at the linkage between your throttle lever and the actual cable that goes to the engine.
