Re: Cal - Reputation of Quality

Hi All:

Regarding Cal quality, here are some good quotes I've heard myself...

Cals:

1. "Cals will be able to get you back when other boats won't." (direct quote from Doug Hamlin, a former...

Re: So what do we do here?

Wishing Bob the best of luck in down times. You've lived a life so many only dream of, yet so few can process. You've touched heros and mix with all. I hope to see you cruising out there soon!

Re: sailing in a thunderstorm

Recently, we completed the channel crossing from Catalina to Avalon. There came up to 20% chances of thunderstorms in L.A. and San Diego, but none forecast for Orange County. I heard a couple...

Re: Tender Cal 31 Vs. Stiffer Handling

Thank you, but the pressure is on, now, to keep the boat looking nice, it is a project after project. Kind of fun, though. :) It costs about $1,200 for wax and teak re varnishing, but I think the...

Re: Cal 33-2 Tender?

As per the Cal mystique, their inherent quality speaks for the boat's quality of workmanship & sturdiness. They cross oceans regularly (properly equipped, of course); Seasters, the 1979 31' I have...

Cal 31 handling

We left June 28, 2012 and ended up staying (me for the whole 2 weeks plus) aboard Seasters. Had a 5 1/2 motor with calm conditions, but with thick fog surprising us just after leaving the harbor. ...

Re: Cal 31

Our 1979 Cal 31', Seasters recently was:

*Rated by surveyor a few months ago as an offshore racer.

*Coast guardsman said a couple of weeks ago that these and other Cals cross the ocean...

Cal 31' Handling

Seasters, a pretty nice 1979 Cal 31', even with original sails, handles nicely with a balance that is easy to achieve with sail trim so the boat sails itself without having any assistance at the helm...

Re: Tender Cal 31 Vs. Stiffer Handling

Thank you, Dale! She sure looks good on the outside, even better when Driscoll's Shipyard in San Diego preps and applies a new bottom paint. The existing multiple repaintings without removal...

Re: Cal 31

Just recently acquired a very nice 1979 Cal 31' in San Diego from Brokaw Yacht Sales, a very reputable yacht broker I would and am going to buy another yacht through. I'm taking steps to make an...

Having just acquired a pretty nice 1979 31' Cal,...

Having just acquired a pretty nice 1979 31' Cal, I have some comments regarding the handling. The tender part of the boat as compared to say a Catalina 30 of similar, or even newer vintage does ring...

Re: those darn thru hulls...

The insurance underwriters say all these should have been double clamped. They all will be soon. Along with new hoses and not plastic valves, at least that's now the plan.

Re: those darn thru hulls...

The thru hull that popped out was above the water line. My main concern would be a following wave just pushing large amounts of water through the 1 1/2" diameter hole not far above the water line. ...

Re: those darn thru hulls...

Thank you for your reply. The galley sink is pretty rotted. I'll check the drain as well and ask the mechanic for advice. I sure don't want the boat sinking, that's the last thing anyone would...

Re: those darn thru hulls...

BTW, the through hull that just fell off didn't even look old or tired. The plastic was deceptively clean and bright white...kind of insidious....:(

Gosh, Thank you for the advice! I'm glad to put out there what I've discovered and sure delighted in seeing what comes back!

If that plastic through hull was hit by a following wave, as well as...

those darn thru hulls...

Upon just a slight tug on the hose connecting to the thru hull on the transom, the middle plastic piece outboard just plopped into the water while the hose with the inboard end attached was in my...

Re: Cal 31

Off of Point Loma, where it blows an apparently consistent 15-20 knots, this boat feels more tender, especially as compared to a Catalina 30.But the Cal 31 has the best feel at the helm of any boat...
