Re: Can I sail to the Bahamas with NO experience?

The guy involved actually had a decent amount of sailing experience. You can see him drawing on that many many times in the video too.

I personally don't like the video not for the reasons most...

Re: Stolen Orange Portland Pudgy in Portland, Oregon

That sucks. If you haven't already, you might consider posting up a notice in the laundry rooms of nearby marinas with a photo.

Those get a lot of reads(laundry is boring) and not much happens at...

Re: s/v S/V question ?

This is me. When someone gives me a physical gift it's basically something that makes me artificially smile, take, and then throw in the trash when I get home. I appreciate the gesture, but it's...

Re: s/v S/V question ?

I use the S/V (which means Sailing Vessel) for my address when I have items delivered. Mostly because it sounds cool :)

But I don't believe I see the S/V used on boat names painted on transoms. It...

Re: Rudder lost at sea and rescue

Realistically this wouldn't be all that easy. And then who's to say the new rudder wouldn't also fail after a bit of use.

In the mean time a very expensive big ship has to stay around. It'd...

Re: Propane or alcohol

An Origo vs propane is a wash IMO. I replaced my old Origo 3000 with a new one last year. It was a really simple project.

If you switch to propane just make sure it's a safe install.

Re: Best small boat for cruising the Bahamas?

I think a lot of the boats mentioned are way overkill for a Bahamas trip. For a $15-20k budget I'd buy an in good condition Catalina 27 for around 5-7k and spend 10k on making sure the engine,...

Re: The future of the sailing world. Why are there so few young people cruising??

I wonder if it's perception more than anything. As in it's less that there's fewer young people sailing and more that we have a much larger quantity of older people cruising than ever before.

Re: Newbe with no experience buys big boat

The thing with the Pudgy is it seems like it'd add a lot of windage if kept up on deck and it sounds pretty heavy to man handle around. So it's not all that hot as a life raft. Then as a tender it...

Re: Exploring Titusville Municipal Marina

I used to live in Orlando and have since moved aboard my own sailboat. Before doing that I used to sea kayak and would hop all over the place from Orlando. Titusville was my go to place mostly...

Re: Electric hybrid Inboard Vs Diesel

You're not just replacing the fuel tank and fuel, but also the heavy engine. In the installs people are doing the weight comes out to the same or less and the balance is fine since it's easier to...

Re: Liveaboard marina suggestions...FL, GA, SC, NC??

I don't have experience with the Jacksonville area, but I do know there are a lot of liveaboard marina options there. It's a big city so there should be some decent education options.

I've lived...

Re: Electric hybrid Inboard Vs Diesel

Initial cost is absolutely higher. Especially if you can re-power with a rebuilt Yanmar and run a DIY install on that. On the battery costs, you're leaving out diesel maintenance. It's not just fuel...

Re: Electric hybrid Inboard Vs Diesel

@glassdad The weight you get from the engine plus fuel tank is what's replaced by the electric engine and batteries. A Thoosa 9000 weighs about 45lbs, so it's really just battery weight.

@tommays...

Re: Electric hybrid Inboard Vs Diesel

Well a 40 amp charger, especially one that likes the charge the gennie puts out, would need to be installed. As would a 48v(or whatever) battery system. And a way to charge both the 48v/12v system on...

Re: Electric hybrid Inboard Vs Diesel

I'm basing that estimate off what people are seeing in the field: THE BIANKA LOG BLOG (http://biankablog.blogspot.com/)

A 28ft boat would probably re-power along the lines of a 6kw electric drive....

Re: Newbe with no experience buys big boat

Yeah. I spent my entire 30's trying to make myself into what society would consider "proper husband material" with a lot of failed dates and relationships to show for it. Three years back a couple...

Re: Electric hybrid Inboard Vs Diesel

Electric propulsion on sailboats is superior to diesel except in 2 ways: power storage and the ability to instantly refill all that power from a fuel pump.

Unfortunately most cruisers need those...

Re: Liveaboard marina suggestions...FL, GA, SC, NC??

The marina I'm at in Ft Pierce, FL is a really nice liveaboard marina, but unfortunately I doubt the Ft Pierce schools are all that great. Vero Beach which is the town north of me would be my first...

Re: Newbe with no experience buys big boat

This doesn't sound like a bad plan. I've spent the last few years switching my career out to something a little more flexible and it's been a change that's brought more security to my life. I can...

I can actually relate to this pretty well, and I got the same sort of vibe from the book.

Re: Newbe with no experience buys big boat

One thing you might consider is that the reason the cruising community looks like it does to you is because single affluent white American men with a family mindset and sense of adventure that travel...
