Re: Splicing double braid

Thanks for the info everyone. I was hoping to get a bit more use out some pretty old rope. I think I will just keep using knots instead of eye splices on the old halyards, and will get new rope for...

Splicing double braid

OK, I need to make some eye splices on a few lines. I have done 3-strand splices, but never double braid. I found some instructions for 'core-dependent' rope, and another for 'non-core-dependent'...

Re: Islander 32

“Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy."
― Benjamin Franklin

I'm sure if that quote was real, Ben would say the same thing about good scotch.

Re: My case for Why you should ditch your engine on a daysailor

Well, I would disagree with the argument against engines, as presented. An engine unexpectedly breaking down is a poor argument for not having an engine. It is, however, a good argument for...

Re: Innovative Human powered boat propulsion?

The second video just looks like a more effective sculling method. I could scull very slowly in a Catalina 22 using large rudder movements (maybe 2 kt in dead air).

Re: Mast Inspection Opinions

I will be interested to hear what the experts think about this. Looks like there is corrosion at the interface. I assume there should be some kind of dielectic material in there that could be...

Re: One-Piece Hatch Board

I like my three part hatch board. I can leave one in if I want a little more security in rough weather. I can have one out at the top in rain at anchor, and not get any water inside. I am making a...

Re: Custom canvas sail covers etc.

I know of a custom canvas shop that is really cheap... it also happens to be really close by... it's on my dining room table! However, they always deliver way past deadline, and sometimes do rather...

Re: Tanzer 27 - Thru Hulls

Leaks.

Ha! Just kidding. Seriously, if you have doubts, go ahead and replace. Don't want to be worried about things way down in the bottom of the boat leaking.

Re: Low buck projects- Let's see 'em!

Cool. Very nautical. I want to do one of the rooms in our house to look exactly like the cabin of an old Herreshoff boat (it would need a galley and head too, b/c if I actually did this my wife...

Re: A little traffic

Possibly. But, it would be nice to have a map of expected shipping density.

Re: Prop walk on a Crealock 37

I'm really suprised there is not more consensus on the hydrodymamics of this problem. Seems like it would be a lot easier to do observations on the flow of water around the bottom of a boat than it...

Re: I Paid a Dude. And I Liked It.

I understand about learning all the stuff for when you are 'out there', and, also, getting things done efficiently so it doesn't take away from sailing. But the fact is, I am just too f***ing cheap...

Re: Hand rail help

I looked at the how-to in Don Casey's book a while back, seemed very do-able. Maybe if there is a bend in the rail it would be tricky. This is really a project that, compared to a professional...

Re: Docking under Sail - Beam reach approach

Let it luff. Loosen the vang. Power down early. You can always sheet in if you need more speed. Plan an escape route if things don't work our right.

Re: Score!

I love good deals. But, I'll admit that I kept getting stuck on the word, 'splurged'. Just sounds like something that would be associated with a head. :)

Here is the list with the Offshore 33, Scanmar 33, 35, and the Kirie Elites. Didn't include the Morris Annie, or Vicoria b/c they are shorter than my criteria:

Re: Keel or deck stepped?

Most say a keel stepped mast is better for off shore work. Some deck stepped masts end up with a compression post that takes up space inside, anyway.
