Re: Raw water cooling - walk away?

The Bukh is a very good engine.
The only problem I had with mine was the exhaust corroded out every few years. Easy enough to replace.
Fit a fresh water flushing system, if you are really worried....

Re: 1983 Yanmar 3GMD REPLACEMENT

If you can afford it, check if the later 3 cylinder 20HP Yanmar (3YM20) will fit on to the same mounts and line up with your shaft.
Expensive, but compared with the old GM series, these are...

Re: Your anchor is too big

I am very happy with a Manson Supreme correctly sized for the boat. Of equal importance is the length of chain. For a 29 foot boat I carry 150 feet of chain, plus another 150 feet of nylon warp....

Re: Yanmar 2gmf stuck in reverse gear

Don't try to shift it without the engine running and don't put it in gear with the prop spinning while sailing, as it can jam and do other nasty things to the gearbox innards.
Read the manual to see...

Re: sextant

I have a Davis which I bought new 20 years ago and also a nice Tamaya which had belonged to a Japanese ship's captain.
The Davis is easier to use because it is so light, and there is hardly any...

Re: Confused about which oil weight to use

Assuming your oil sample report is good, it would still be worth monitoring your engine's health for a while.
Buy or borrow one of those filter cutters (like a can opener). If you can't get one at...

Re: Confused about which oil weight to use

DixieJ, a very good idea to have your engine oil analysed. Hopefully it will give you peace of mind. The fact that the engine seized AFTER you shut it down may have saved it. They do heat soak a...

Re: Confused about which oil weight to use

Drifting off subject a little, but to revive the old debate about whether to convert a raw water engine to fresh cooling is worth the money.
Personally, I don't believe it is. Raw water cooling is...

Re: Confused about which oil weight to use

DixeyJulie, to have an engine seize through overheating once is bad, twice is terrible!

You say you have water flow through the exhaust, so the raw water side seems OK. However, what is the...

Re: 2GM 15 dies when I put it in Fwd

2500 rpm is not enough, but it may not be a lack of power, it may be something as simple as throttle cable rigging.

I suggest that you get it idling at 900 to 950 rpm, if that is where it will...

Re: Tasmania - She even has a Wombat Cove!

I have spent the last two summers aboard in Tassie and plan on more. Warmer waters there may be, but I reckon Tassie has got all that an older cruising yachty needs. Short passage times between...
