Re: Poll: Baltimore as a Destination

As a resident of Baltimore who has lived, worked, and walked in the city for the past 15 years, I have to finally weigh in here.

Yes, Baltimore has more than its fair share of challenges related...

Re: Whats your best bit of kit??

Great thread!

Id have to say the large-diameter wheel is my favorite bit of kit.

It allows me to comfortably sit outboard and drive, and, because I am fairly tall, when I stand behind the...

Re: Looking for premium coastal cruiser 39 LOA or less

The first thing that comes to my mind is X-Yachts; the Xc 35 or Xc 38 look like a sweet ride.

What is it about your Catalina 36 that makes you want to move up?

Re: Contest/Game - Identify this picture

The Lisbon Maritime museum does a great job highlighting the great contributions that Portugese explorers have made (although the Dutch held their own :) ). We enjoyed our visit there a couple of...

Isn't that a picture of the maritime museum in Lisbon?

Re: Contest/Game - Identify this picture

The red swirl on the stack pack looks like it could be a Moorings logo. Was the photo taken near a charter base? Croatia, maybe Split?

Re: Contest/Game - Identify this picture

It sure is. Not much sailing going on on this section of the Rhine river, but the lakes in Switzerland look like amazing sailing venues.

Your turn!

Re: Contest/Game - Identify this picture

No, you still need to go much further west. And move over one continent.

Here's another view from the deck of the ferry, looking upstream. There is actually a huge clue in the photo.

Re: Contest/Game - Identify this picture

Sailing to this city would be tough, but a powerboat will get you there.

Re: Contest/Game - Identify this picture

It's the lock in the original Chesapeake and Delaware Canal in Delaware City, before it was rerouted through Reedy Point.

Re: Anchor light for steaming: legal?

This is essentially how our boat is set up--all-around/anchor light over the tri-color at the top of the mast, and a bi-color on the mast where most boats would have a steaming light. Under sail, we...

Re: Contest/Game - Identify this picture

I recognized the logo from their advertising that was always plentiful in 1980s Europe. Oslo is at the end of a long fjord off the Skagerrak but I'd say it's more North Sea than Baltic Sea. And as...

Re: Contest/Game - Identify this picture

Does the lettering on the white ferry say Stena Lines? They run mostly to Scandinavian destinations. My guess is we're in Oslo, Norway, but I am not sure of the sky and water color clue...

Re: Contest/Game - Identify this picture

No offense taken :)

Nicely done! I already had a bunch of clues lined up, including the dead giveaway that a herd of giraffes does windmill demonstrations on the weekends.

Donjuanluis,...

Re: Contest/Game - Identify this picture

There is one huge "general location clue" in this one, but let's see if anyone recognizes the town.

Re: X-5 Auto Pilot opinions

Also, just what exactly did your bungee cord hold in place? Was this a permanent installation or a temporary fix?

For what it's worth, I recently sent an i70 instrument to Raymarine for service...

Re: Recommend Marinas for a 2 month stay Summer 2015

Based on a two-day stop in Hampton Roads last year, I second the suggestion to look for marinas in Hampton. Nice facilities, and there are amenities nearby.

There also seem to be nice marinas...

Re: 2014 Sailing Season

This reminds me of some good advice given to me years ago:
1. Always trust your compass, and
2. Don't get your boat into a situation you're not sure you can get out of.

Re: So where the heck do you shower???

I'm 6'8" so I feel your husband's pain (literally, at times).

As others have said, you can shower sitting down in the head, or even kneeling on the floor. But if your goal is to do overnight...

Re: Creepy sailing stories?

You stole my thunder! We had the same thing happening in Baltimore Harbor; it was a large neoprene glove bobbing with the fingers pointing up, as if someone was about to rise up out of the water.

Re: Spinnaker guys and sheets

You wouldn't slide the sheet (the guy really, once it's on the pole), in and out of snatch block after each jibe. I'd suggest that you permanently lead the guy/sheet through a block on a separate...
