Re: VOR "Chinese gybe"

Canting keel uses a hydraulic pump to move the keel to windward to increase righting moment. If there is an accidental gybe, the keel is pointing straight down, so the boat will not right itself...

Re: Can You Tell Us About the Chesapeake and Annapolis?

If you like cold you can sail from mid-March to mid-December, and sometimes more than that. Right now the water near Annapolis is 38 degrees, so 50 degree air feels cold (I was out in it yesterday)....

Re: LD light strips

I've used cheap LED reels to replace flourescents. Work great! Just connect the ends to a 12 volt power source.

Re: Tacktick wind direction failed

I'd check with RayMarine. Sounds like the transmitter is bad. I had the opposite situation - direction worked fine, speed was erratic. Luckily it was under warranty or it would have been a $200...

Re: Which weather/wind apps & sites are most accurate? gives two different models. WindAlert and wind guru can be good. No one site is great all the time.

Re: How far out? - Cellular Range from shore.

You can get cell up to 12-14 miles from the closest tower, but the tower may be inland several miles.

Re: 3 GM 30 Yanmar, White Powder

Is there gasket behind the plate that is failing? I'd clean it off and climb down there with the engine running. bring some soapy water. put it around the plate and look for bubbles.

Re: Charts to Bermuda from Chesapeake Bay

Yes, BUT!! It takes the right boat, properly equipped with the right crew. Races to Bermuda are category 1 for a reason. Here is a list of safety requirements as a guide:...

Re: Charts to Bermuda from Chesapeake Bay

There is a planing chart Newport to Bermuda. Number is 5161. You also need 13003. You'll need a detailed chart of the Island.

Re: looking for marina

Congrats! Annapolis proper is expensive and I don't know who permits live a boards. Liberty Marina on South River might be an option. Its close to Rt 50, but 97 can be a bear! Others can chime in...

Re: Annapolis Spring Boatshow 2014

There is only one water taxi I know of. Your best bet is to find a marina on Back Creek that the water taxi runs to. The Spring show is a shadow of the Fall show.

Re: Configuring New System - Which Raymarine Components?

Whether you use 1 display or 3 is a matter of personal preference. I don't like my cockpit to look like a 747, so I use as few displays as possible unless I'm racing. The the IPad becomes an extra...

Re: Configuring New System - Which Raymarine Components?

If the ST 60 works, I'd keep it and connect it to the E7 through the NMEA 183 port. Standard Horizon 2150 VHF seems to be the best w/AIS receiver, but is NMEA 183. I'd look for a NMEA 2000 version...

Re: Configuring New System - Which Raymarine Components?

Jason, Seatalk NG is NMEA 2000 with proprietary connectors. You can get NG to 2000 cables or NMEA 2000 connectors and use NMEA 2000 stuff and save a few hundred bucks. Also, there is no need to get...

Re: Recommended Instruments

I would only buy NMEA 2000 instruments. The E7 and a triducer on a NMEA backbone will meet your needs and come close to your budget but will not give you wind. A wireless Ray system with wind,...

Re: Inexpensive slip in Western Chesapeake?

Congrats!! I have a 35/3. Best bet is a private dock. There are lots on Mill Creek/Whitehall area. Also check out Orchard Beach Marina. More than a private dock, less than any other marina. ...

Re: steam in Westerbeke exhaust

Steam is water leaking into a cylinder. If FWC, check coolant level. Probably need a compression test to rule out bad head gasket or worse.

Re: New Main Sail - Ouch!

Try Rolly Tasker as well. They have a rep in Annapolis.
