Re: NY/CT/LIS Boatyard & Marina help?

Oyster Bay isn't "rural" but it is a nice town and a primary rail line. Good sheltered harbor and a fast trip into LI Sound and then plenty of options to go both ways.

Sailing the Hudson above...

Re: Which SAT phones are good/best?

Well, Dave, if you get a Fisher-Price satphone, everyone around you will be re-assured and calm down when they see you using it, and there are no pesky subscription airtime fees to worry about. (G)

Re: Choosing the right metal

I'd also vote for bronze. And get rid of the stainless steel cable while you're at it. In this century, synthetic cordage is the material of choice.

Re: Compression post misalignment

Bubblehead-
If all the tension is off a compression post, it shouldn't need a hydraulic ram to move it over a titch. I'd doublecheck to make sure nothing else is holding it, and run a tape measure...

Re: please help me iD my boat

Out it in the water, sail it. Somebody will come up to you and say "Oh wow, I knew old such-and-so, is that his boat?" and tell you all about it.

Re: sealing cabin sole

So take a leisurely drive up to Bay City, MI, and pick up a penetrant epoxy directly from Gougeon Bros. (West System) at their plant, if you don't want to mail order it from someone. Or there's...

Re: Coast Guard Documentation process times.

Minne-
Ten year terms would be nice, but poor administration. Consider, you get a ten year registration and sell the boat two years later. For eight more years it is a ghost ship, STILL IN YOUR...

Re: What's the *second* best way to keep spiders off your boat?

I'm not sure if Permethrin (synthetic version of the natural insecticide that is in chrysanthemums) works on spiders, but it is used to kill ticks and other bugs contact. You don't spray it on them,...

Re: Trailer brake fire!

A good reason to use the Motive Pressure Bleeder instead of that vacuum nonsense. Pressure bleeders just don't have those problems, can't have them. Ford used to use something similar too, no idea...

Re: VHF DSC Handheld with AIS?

Isn't there a flip side to every coin?
I would think "off when docked" since you're basically part of the shoreline then, of little to no concern to anyone else unless they're looking to...

Re: I want to paint my main sail

I don't know about any wax or sizing being applied to sailcloth in order to make it easier to sew. Most or much cloth does have sizing applied for that reason, that's why your [sic] mother said to...

Re: Sailboat hits Power Line in Cocoa, Florida!

If the "authorized" clearance in the New River incident is 80 feet and the power company says an arc can jump 20 feet, then one might suspect the power lines are at 100' above the water, and the...

Re: AIS phantom ship

Well, I think the easiest way to prank it, is to wrap some duct tape around a handheld and a drone, and send it off. Total construction time, five minutes?

But you're right, that's not needed....

Re: PB Blaster on my stuffing box?

The traditional EZOff paste is lye. Not good for seals, O-rings, also attacks & discolors fiberglass. Wiping it off now contaminates a rag and your rubber gloves.

Just fwiw.

Re: Lights for boat without a battery?

If you can't sail from that lake all the way down to the oceans?

The USCG probably has no jurisdiction there, they only deal with "navigable waterways". Your state (unmentioned) and municipality...

Re: AIS phantom ship

Some prankster screwing around with a drone?

But the web sites all showing AIS info, surely some of them are also archiving it. The USCG probably will be very interested in this, and if they...

Re: PB Blaster on my stuffing box?

Perhaps because one has, or hasn't, been misinformed?
And it cleans so much stuff so nicely, without burning holes in things.

Well, that's the...

Re: Charging Woes

What Owl said.

If you're showing one amp, then either you've got a large drain, or the gizmo you're measuring it with is out of whack.

So check the amperage you're really pulling, then make...

Re: PB Blaster on my stuffing box?

The squeeze bulbs of lemon juice have all sorts of chemicals in them. AFAIK there's only one, frozen by MinuteMaid, bottled lemon juice without additives.

But I wouldn't worry about that, vinegar...

Re: Sailboat hits Power Line in Cocoa, Florida!

Is it just related to the view/tiling in Open Captain, are do the NOAA charts for that area also just say "Overhead power cable" in so many places, without any comment on the clearance?
