Re: 26 foot catalina open water?

There were several C25 boats made. Fixed keel or swing keel? Fixed keel would be more suitable for this kind of a trip.
A good, experienced sailor is a big factor in this consideration. And with a...

re: 26 foot catalina open water?

Is this C27? Not sure if there is C26.
If you and your boat are well prepared for this type of sailing, it should not be a problem.

Re: Hunter 27 - A Little Look Please?

Congratulations! It is a big boat to start learning on but you already know that.
Hopefully it is a shoal draft version of this boat.

Re: Hunter 27 - A Little Look Please?

I would much rather buy this boat (similar price):

Re: 1964 Columbia 29 as First Boat

Looks like a solid, well kept boat. Real classic, worth preserving. Not many of these left around.

Re: Is this a dumb idea?

Yes, it should be enough for one good coat, if the surface is smooth.

Re: Anyone keep an old tire aboard for tow-assist/fender/sea-anchor duty?

I found that the easiest way to cut a drainage hole in a tire is to use a punch made of galvanized pipe with a sharpened edge.
Grind down the edge on the pipe to a sharp angle, place the tire on a...

Re: Anyone keep an old tire aboard for tow-assist/fender/sea-anchor duty?

What I had in mind was a 17 or 18" car tire weighted with 20-30 lbs of anchoring chain, tied to a 200' of anchoring rope, to use on a 30' boat as a sea anchor. I have no direct experience with...

Re: Anyone keep an old tire aboard for tow-assist/fender/sea-anchor duty?

Probably bigger tire for bigger boats. I thought that adding a bit of weight to it (like a short section of chain to act as a bridle on the tire leading to the towing line) might be a good idea - it...

Re: Anyone keep an old tire aboard for tow-assist/fender/sea-anchor duty?

Using tire as a sea anchor? Brilliant! Does it need to be weighted to work properly?

Re: 14 foot sailboat on a 17 foot trailer okay?

I have that very same boat (Holder 14) and used several different trailers for it over the years. IMO just about any trailer is fine for a small boat like that. I prefer to use the lightest (and...

Re: Can anyone give me a valid reason to carry a firearm?

A valid reason in one word: Kraken.
And now for the real question:
What do I need to carry to protect myself from Kraken?

Re: What concerns do you have when a boat has been out of the water for a long time?

Boat looks nice and clean, well kept. I read that it was stored for 17 years a while ago (by original owner). Recent work means that it was in good use recently. Good price and worth taking a close...

Re: Cape Dory Intrepid 9M vs Santana 30 vs others 30 footers

6 people on a 25 foot boat is hard on people and on the holding tank. One night might be the limit. ;)

Re: Cape Dory Intrepid 9M vs Santana 30 vs others 30 footers

I have seen people modify these tables. Not much to it and I would never hold it against such a good boat. When you are talking sleeping 6 people on a 30 foot boat, I would rather sleep in the...

Re: Cape Dory Intrepid 9M vs Santana 30 vs others 30 footers

Yes, superior construction and components, as with other CD boats. Nothing greatly innovative about the design, but it is a stiff boat (40% displacement is the lead keel) that sails well.

Re: Cape Dory Intrepid 9M vs Santana 30 vs others 30 footers

Cape Dory Intrepid is a rock solid boat, much better IMO than other boats on your list. I would also look at Tartan 30. They can be had dirt cheap and are very good boats in terms of design,...

You can probably take them out with a good pellet rifle. Aim for the blades. Quiet and discreet.

Good trailer for these larger boats is very valuable. Like yours, with 2 axles, front wheel, and nice support for the boat that helps you find the spot where the boat has...
