Cool Dinghy Cruising/Camping?

I always like to think of things that I don't see or read very often, and I'm also not one to settle for 'one or the other', in this case, racing and cruising.

I've seen lately people asking if a...

Re: Small (<20') Pocket Cruiser Cat?

I'm down in North Carolina, sailing anywhere I can!
It's either dead calm or 15+ kt, but I also go down to Georgia every now and then and sail there as well. Much better there!

Re: Small (<20') Pocket Cruiser Cat?

TropicCat,

I think you've said it perfectly.
That takes us back to the whole reason this thread came to mind in the first place.

Even though I'm only in my 20's, it seems apparent, regardless...

Re: Small (<20') Pocket Cruiser Cat?

Very interesting logic, although I certainly don't argue with the performance characteristics of the catamarans.

When it comes to dinks vs. cruisers, I have much to learn, so I'm trying to soak it...

Re: FJ in need of blocks, newbie at helm. Help!

Thank you for the informative pictures! :)
And congrats on your new FJ! What company built it? I've not seen one with an open bow compartment like that. Mine's an Advance from 1967, and I have zero...

Re: FJ in need of blocks, newbie at helm. Help!

hahaha nope.... no traveller, no vang, no blocks, no anything really.

there's a cleat on the centerboard trunk which I guess is supposed to be some sort of 'block' for the mainsheet, but it's...

Re: FJ in need of blocks, newbie at helm. Help!

Thanks again for the fantastic info!
I stepped away for a while (work has been brutally busy, leaving little time to do anything but sleep), but I'm back into research/renovate mode.

I will...

Re: Small (<20') Pocket Cruiser Cat?

Ahhhhh I see..... That makes a lot of sense! :)

I've not (yet) sailed a keel boat with ballast of any kind, so maybe a catamaran wouldn't be so different in a tack for me? I basically just carry a...

Re: Small (<20') Pocket Cruiser Cat?

Sorry to waste your time.

Just wanted to explore options in what is a seemingly bare category, since others seem to share the needs I have.

But, as this apparently isn't just a friendly...

Re: Small (<20') Pocket Cruiser Cat?

Very interesting....

Based on the jarcat build journal and the CAD pictures of the Eco designs, I would've thought the Eco would be easier to build. But then again, I know exactly nothing about...

Re: Small (<20') Pocket Cruiser Cat?

haha it's funny you mention that journal.... I actually read it last night :)

I think a Jarcat might be a bit more than I can chew at this point (from a building standpoint).

In regards to the...

Re: Small (<20') Pocket Cruiser Cat?

Re: Small (<20') Pocket Cruiser Cat?

Those crab boats are really interesting for sure. And I kinda even like the cabin, which, if you tilt your head the right way, ALMOST looks like a little Lagoon. I think they're a bit 'old' for my...

Re: Small (<20') Pocket Cruiser Cat?

That American looks like quite a nice craft!
I think you should be quite happy with that vessel, as it looks like a great daysailer with an easy rig.
It might just be me, but it looks a little bit...

Faster: Thanks for posting the pictures!
From what I've read, that rig on the ECO is much cheaper to build, and supposedly pretty efficient??? I'd love to see real pictures of these little guys...

Re: Small (<20') Pocket Cruiser Cat?

It's funny you mention that... Before deciding on my FJ, I was considering all of the above. I love Daysailers, and Flying Scots even more.

I think I just want to try a cat though. Not a 'let's...

Small (<20') Pocket Cruiser Cat?

First of all, I'm fairly new to the forums, and I wanted to thank everyone for the help RE: gear on my old FJ. She's a great boat, and I've been having a blast sailing her. Went out solo...

Re: FJ in need of blocks, newbie at helm. Help!

Brilliant!

That's exactly the kind of thing I was looking for, as it eliminates a lot of the guesswork I would surely get wrong.

There's a million different types and sizes of rigging/gear,...

Thanks for the welcome, everyone!

I took my FJ out for its maiden (since taking ownership) this Sunday, and boy did I learn a lot.

I'll be the first to say that I don't have much experience...

Re: New Sailor, New Boat

Is picture uploading broken?

I keep getting 'upload failed' messages when trying to attach messages.

Also, does anyone have any experience with these old CFJs?
Any rigging tips?
