Re: Battery Terminal Short-Circuit Protection

Be careful when you are tightening the connectors.
Do not short the spanner across the terminals.
I know of one case of a terrible eye injury when a battery exploded with this mistake.

Be...

Re: fuel tank leaking...

Thanks for all the input.
I will try to seal the floor of the tank with the sealant to buy some time.
I don't need much fuel range where I am right now.
Last time I sealed it it lasted 17 years....

Re: fuel tank leaking...

Captain Len,

I never could get a new tank in there. There are cross members in the way, and a big chunk of the accommodation lies over a big chunk of the left side of the tank.

Re: fuel tank leaking...

Guys....

Thanks for all your help. It really is invaluable.
Access is very difficult, though.
I think i will try some more 2-part polysulphide an see if it gets me to the end of season.

Re: fuel tank leaking...

RichH :

Thanks.
The GRP is an external sheath.
That was not good news about the modern biofuels attacking the polysulphide sealant.
I have been putting quite a lot of road diesel in there too....

Re: fuel tank leaking...

Denise :

The problem with fuel bladders is that they chafe constantly.

The local boat yard has no faith in them.

Re: fuel tank leaking...

hpeer :

I used PR 1422B1/2 from Courtaulds.

It is a long-serving formulation, apparently.

fuel tank leaking...

The fuel tank on my USC Polaris 36 is leaking.
It is a steel sheet tank, sheathed in GRP and next to impossible to get it out of there without tearing the ship apart.

When near full, it drips at...

Re: How to start engine on the hard?

Let the engine suck the water in out of a bucket.
Keep the bucket fed with a hose.
You cannot go wrong.
Remember to shut the hose off when you stop the motor.

Re: Need Advice on Adding Portlight

A single wave on an Atlantic crossing struck the port bow of my ship.
There was a profound "crack".
All eyes forward.
Then i noticed it.
The entire accommodation had come loose from the hull....

Re: Yanmar parts source... starter?

If the starter will not turn at all, turn on the battery master and the ignition (ignition "on" but NOT the full turn of the key to start the motor) and try shorting the two terminals at the back of...

Re: Soot( Carbon) in engine bay.

Belt dust.
Definitely belt dust.
Wash it off, check the belt.
Not much to worry about.

Re: Volvo MD 7/A Waterflow

Chris...

The engines will last a lot longer than that.
My MD17C is in to its 38 year, albeit with some work needed in the past.

Re: Anyone keep an old tire aboard for tow-assist/fender/sea-anchor duty?

Sloopjon :

Never say never.

I have painful memories of one Thursday morning when a terrible squall came through Peterhead, Scotland. The buffeting was terrible, and my Polaris 36 was pinned...

Re: Yanmar 1GM Sitting 5 years

Turn it over by had to make sure that it will turn, give it some new fuel with a temporary supply, check the oils and start that motor.
If it runs OK, then leave it.
If it does not, then begin...

Re: Yanmar YSM8 siphoning water into cylinder

Yes, if you are cranking for a while, or think you might have to, shut the engine intake through-hull for the cooling circuit. You can always open it again when the motor starts.
If you crank and...

Re: Yanmar YSM8 siphoning water into cylinder

If your siphon defence siphon break is working OK then it should not be a problem.
It should not matter what size the exhaust pipe is, if the siphon break is working.
The siphon break detects that...

Re: MD7 Diesel in motor oil ?? maybe MD 7

Check the diaphragm on the engine-mounted lift pump. It may be leaking. That's all I can think of.

I don't think that leaking past the rings would do it. they would have to be leaking like crazy...

Re: Re power choices for Sweden 36

Do not touch another Volvo. Later you will get savaged for spare part prices.
I would go for one of the top-flight Japanese motors.
They will probably rev higher, so you need to be ready for the...

Is there a model you...
