Re: using the palm of your hand on a winch

FWIW this is basically what we were taught:

Re: using the palm of your hand on a winch

It's what we were taught in my ASA class about 8 or 9 years ago. He did emphasize the danger of putting your hand in the wrong place.

Re: "Acceptance of the Vessel" question

There's generally a time deadline for being able to get the deposit back as well.

Re: Ericson 30-2 (Transom-hung rudder)

Thanks, Ron. I get what you're saying as far as the situation when moored. On the Ericson 30-2 the traveler is right at the bridge deck. The boat for sale has no dodger, so I'm trying to visualize...

Re: Ericson 30-2 (Transom-hung rudder)

Thanks. Now the only real issue with the design for me is the traveler in front of the companionway. Not sure that's negotiable with SWMBO.

Ericson 30-2 (Transom-hung rudder)

So not an Ericson 30 or an Ericson 30+. This 1979 boat has a tiller with rudder hung from the transom.

Re: Sequence for offer/buying

Since I've been boat shopping, I looked into this same question a little. You can find standard templates for boat purchase agreements on line, so that it is good starting point. The key is make...

Re: Fiberglass Gelcoat

I recall Don Casey warning about use of paint stripper on gelcoat since gelcoat is chemically similar to paint. The key is to not leave the stripper on very long if you use it at all.

That...

Re: Raw water cooling - walk away?

Thanks, Ron. Not familiar with the Ontario 32 at all. I'll add it to my list of possibles.

I only know the CS 33 by reputation. I haven't seen a layout drawing showing an aft berth or...

Re: Raw water cooling - walk away?

Thanks for the replies - lots of good information. I'll keep the CS 33 on my list.

Denise - not quite sure what you're asking - but I'm looking for a keelboat in the 30' to 35' range for...

Raw water cooling - walk away?

One of the boats I'm interested in is a CS 33. There is one for sale in BC that looks promising, except for the Bukh diesel that is sea water cooled - or at least it was originally in 1984. I'm...

Question C&C 35 Mkiii?

There are a couple these boats available nearby that are somewhere close to my (ever increasing) budget figure. I may have a chance to look at them later this week.

My online research seems to...

Re: DC Refrigeration Wiring

I'm no expert on boat refrigeration, but as an EE, I would wire the refrigerator to the dc panel, and size the wire appropriately to limit the voltage drop. The loads are not that high. This is a...

Re: Freedom 30 - Worth a look?

Everything I've read indicates that Freedoms have cored hulls. The amount of coring seems to vary somewhat. The deck is cored I'm sure. Good luck in your search.

Re: Freedom 30 - Worth a look?

Thanks for all the comments. I have read some reviews indicating that the unstayed mast would not point as high as a stayed mast. The jib is pretty small as well, so I'm guessing these boats are...

Freedom 30 - Worth a look?

I've been looking to move up from my trailer sailor to a keel boat as I ease into retirement. My sailing plans would be coastal cruising in the San Juan and Gulf Islands, with a home base in Port...

Re: Electronics on Charter Boats

Charter company should be able to tell you what the boat is equipped with. I generally bring my own charts, tide/current tables, guide books and a handheld GPS and VHF radio regardless. The...

Re: Need electrical advise

You should have probably started a new thread for this. But just replace the ballast with a 120V (or multi-voltage) ballast. Much simpler

Re: Is NSA a bad thing?

NSA?? How are they interfering with your sailing and putting marinas out of business? Probably to blame for the ebola virus as well. Anything the NSA wants to do to you they can do on shore as...

Re: Being a good guest/crew member

Bring earplugs and a willingness to wash dishes, clean and cook. Bring something for seasickness even if you've never gotten seasick. You'll need to stand your watch regardless of how sick you are.

Re: Leaking keel bolts

There was a fairly recent thread on this issue on Catalinas. At some point - maybe 1987, Catalina stopped using the plywood in the keel stub so you may be OK there. Catalina has a factory sketch on...

Re: Can bleach damage FRP

It's not advisable to leave any stainless steel in contact with bleach for extended times. It's OK to use bleach for cleaning SS, but it needs to be rinsed off.
