Re: Best MultiFunction Instrument

I'd recommend looking at a B&G combo pack. Maybe add a Vulcan later. Ipad only as a repeater for Vulcan and planning sw.

Re: B&G Zeus Chartplotter Question

Sail is well under 5% of Garmin's total revenue. I'm not making that bet. And the latest Garmin sail products IMO look more like attempts to catch up with long available B&G SailSteer, StartLine,...

Re: chart plotter performance without external antenna?

If it helps. I have a Zeus 7T mounted below decks (balsa cored). The internal antenna will sometimes loose fix, particularly if a meat bag is sitting over head. The external ZG100 on the pushpit...

Re: chart plotter performance without external antenna?

10 Hz GPS is the new 1 Hz. A lot of the newer GPS kit supports 10 Hz updates. Smoother updating of heading-up displays, better for autopilots in high dynamic conditions, etc.

Re: Will a Airmar DST800 transducer fit in a Navman thru hull?

Your issue is the water arresting flap on the through hull failing correct? And I recall you were pulling the transducer every week?

My DTS800 is fine. But I'm pulling the transducer only a few...

Re: Topping lift vs. boom kicker

+1 ^ this. Plus the reefing issue.

Thin Dyneema will work great as a lift and fly free when eased.

Re: the vang, you can save 1/2 the cost, some weight, etc by going to a low friction ring...

Re: Flying Scot - did I buy the wrong boat?

Our fleet races in these conditions all the time. The FS will fly downwind in 15 knots plus. Baring the occasional flip :D.

Re: What is the life span of a chart plotter???

BTW both companies were top quality brands. Pained me very much to pull them, but lack of interface-ability, dated display tech, etc. pushed me off the fence. I have no expectations that the new...

Re: Flying Scot - did I buy the wrong boat?

Tying my comments back to the OP. Ever tried getting the sails off after a capsize with the boat being tossed in 4' seas?

Any number of far better ways to do this. Just one would be low stretch...

Re: Flying Scot - did I buy the wrong boat?

- the halyards are wire (meat hooks).
- they often don't wrap evenly around the drums, often overriding.
- the handle is known to snap.
- the handle often gets lost (needs to be tethered somehow)....

Re: Flying Scot - did I buy the wrong boat?

If it helps, I have capsized the FS about half a dozen times over the last few years. All racing. Typically a) spaz-ed out with the mainsheet cleated upwind in gusty / shifting Northerlys and b)...

Re: What is the life span of a chart plotter???

I recently replaced a 15 year old Northstar chartplotter and 30 year old Datamarine Corinthian kit. All still functioning.

And neither are still in business. Lesson to be learned?

Re: Datamarine S-200DL Deph Sounder replacement

I replaced all my Datamarine Corinthians with B&G Tritons. The install required fabricating square 1/8" G10 mounting adapters to mate the Tritons with the Corinthian openings in my bulkhead. The G10...

Re: Favorite iPad Navigation App..?

I do mind having to spend $$$ and time to trial these apps.

What I want out of these planning apps is full function waypoint and route management (chart OR pick list), with ability to move that...

Re: Vang mechanical advantage

Be careful that first 2:1 turn block is strong enough.

Also, leave some travel so you can blow off leech pressure in heavy air.

Whats the triangle plate made of?

Re: Vang mechanical advantage

I just did a 12:1 using dyneema, low friction rings, finished with 3:1 blocks back to the clutch. All up cost well under 200. Already had a topper on the boom.

Re: Soft shackles--What have you used them for?

You can't and you don't. If that setup works for you ... fine.

That said, I just replaced similar 30 year old 4:1 vang with a 12:1 cascade using dyneema strop around the boom, 4:1 dyneema/low...
