Re: Need a commercial insurer

I don't know if Erie does or not, but I recently had a claim with them (my mechanic backed into my car while in his shop) and they seemed very good, I am going to look into changing over to them. I...

Re: Favorite inflatable and colapsable kayaks

Is this the male sailor trying to meet male sailor thread? :laugher

There is a guy not to far from me who makes canvas on frame kayaks They look nice, but has anyone actually used one? He says...

Re: Alcohol Stove and Heater

Biggest issue with the Orgo heater that I have seen reported is that they produce a LOT of moisture, so they will aggravate condensation. It is also unventilated so if the boat is sealed up and...

Re: 1 rescued, 1 dead, 4 missing in Mobile Bay Regatta

How is does that quote go that is in some folks signature "anyone can make a sailboat go, but it takes a real sailor to make it stop" or something like that? This is the same storm that blew a train...

Re: Favorite inflatable and colapsable kayaks

From my research, inflatables are great as long as you are not expecting the performance of a fiberglass sea kayak. It is really all about storage for most boats. I believe S/V LeaLea has Innova and...

Re: 1 rescued, 1 dead, 4 missing in Mobile Bay Regatta

Not defending them but if they were out of control they may not have been able to stop. Perhaps their rudder was taken out in the collision. I could think of several reasons that they did not stop. I...

Re: 1 rescued, 1 dead, 4 missing in Mobile Bay Regatta

Well they reported 55 knot winds apparent, so give that they looked to be surfing along at least 10 knots it is getting into the upper 60 knot range. I think the GoPro with it's ultra wide angle lens...

Re: 2-blade Flexofold Problems

I think too that companies have been burned by email conversations that were perhaps made public out of context. I know there was an incident with AirHead where a customer was obviously not going to...

Re: boat for bahamas, but limited by bridge clearance and draft

33 foot Offshore Cat Ketch would work and is pretty much what they were made for. I think any cat ketch would as well Freedom, Herreshoff etc.

Re: 1 rescued, 1 dead, 4 missing in Mobile Bay Regatta

I really don't see that there was anything they could have done to help the boat. They were doing all they could to control there own boat that seemed to be surfing along down wind on bare polls....

Re: Groton CT to Branford CT

You can look at active captain (https://activecaptain.com/) to check out ports along the way. You might want to make notes on what ones folks say are good and bad. That way if something breaks or you...

Re: Plugs for DC Electronics?

I guess the real question is what and where are you planning on plugging in? Is your coffee pot a 12 volt? If so I hope you have a LOT of time! You might want to use a pour over with a tea kettle...

Re: Plugs for DC Electronics?

Well most cigarette lighter sockets seem to corrode, but it is the most useful as you can use normal car/RV appliances on them. Seems any of the more specialized plug/port combo is a pain as you have...

Re: storm hood (or whatever it's called)

Now this could be a good way to get a base to start from as long as it was close to the correct size.

Denise you seem to be doing a lot of projects on a boat you have an accepted offer on! Hope...

Re: Are you sure you really want that captain's license?

Well just think what a furry there woudl be if the "captain" of that ferry boat had not been licensed! I suppose much of the liability would then have been shifted onto the company.

Re: Enlarging hole for screw-out deck plate? File? Dremel?

Anything should work on this, but make sure you have a dust mask and eye protection. When cutting or sanding fiberglass it tends to fly, don' ask how I know! Dremel (first choice), file, rasp what...

Re: Auto vs manual inflate lifejackets

Yea, like seat belts, sure there are a few situations you might actually better off without it, perhaps like .00000001% of the time or something. I suppose it might make sense to have the ability to...

Well I don't think anyone said he should not. My comments were more that a sight like this is unlikely for anyone to be successful straight or gay. Dating sights do seem quite successful. I have...

Well that is one issue with being a crotchety old guy (at least that is my problem) but I don't think Denise should have any issue finding volunteers to help her! I would jump in just hoping to learn...

Re: I need more horsepower

That is likely why you say you get pretty good fuel mileage as well. If you pushed it up to 3500 RPM (entirely unnecessary) your consumption would go way up!

Re: I need more horsepower

Keep in mind the A4 has a much less linear power curve. Most installs of A4's don't put anywhere near the 30 HP because no one wants to wind it out that much. A diesel's power curve is quite a bit...
