Re: Forces on a dockline while docking....

Re: Full Throttle....My inclination in having to make such a landing would be full throttle in reverse on approach to try to check/minimize the forward speed. I suspect the neighbor was doing that...

Re: Those new fangled Mantus Anchors..Bought One...Why

Two thoughts here:

1) the boom will allow me to keep anchor's sharp edges away from the hull of the boat. I don't want to have the anchor bouncing off the side of the boat, with its sharp edges....

Re: Those new fangled Mantus Anchors..Bought One...Why

I think either way would be fine. Tack welding nut in place would make operation simpler, but welding would require consideration as to increased chance for rust, and heat might affect the strength...

Re: Those new fangled Mantus Anchors..Bought One...Why

Hugosalt,

No, I haven't used mine...actually haven't anchored out since I bought it. In my case, I primarily wanted that anchor to use in combination with my other anchors in the event I have to...

Re: Vectran sleeve for anchor rode?

Since your concern is abrasion of the rope rode which will contact the bottom, how about this possibility.....a three part rode. Anchor, then short chain...20 ft. or so to help set the anchor, then...

Re: Sailboat perishes off Hatteras, USCG rescues crew

I wonder if that half million dollar boat had belonged to them, would they have still have attempted an outside trip in the face of the weather warnings? I am sure that there are lots of skilled,...

Re: Sailboat perishes off Hatteras, USCG rescues crew

They were professionals....just doing the job that only professionals can do.

Let's see, the owner is out of a nice boat....half a million dollars. Or, perhaps it's the insurance company, which...

Re: Harness and Tether Recommendations?

A question for inshore/near shore sailors....when do you deploy the jackline and when do you take it in? Same question of off-shore sailors.

Most people seem to use webbing or tubular webbing for...

Re: Harness and Tether Recommendations?

For those who would like to get the jackline off the deck, C.S. Johnson makes a Jackline Fairlead that attaches to shrouds (and possibly a backstay) to get your jackline off the deck, thus possibly...

Re: Harness and Tether Recommendations?

For hot weather and where one prefers not to wear the combination inflatable PFD/harness, another possibility is to use a harness in combination with a belt pack inflatable PFD. The belt pack...

Re: yanmar manual crank?

My previous boat had the YSM-12 (single cylinder) and my battery was forever dying. With the compression lever closed, it was impossible for me to use the crank to turn the engine over. With the...

Chef,

When you comment, at least make the comments on what was actually said.

Re: HMS Bounty in trouble...

My point is that we don't solve every new problem with more and more rules and regulations. Sure, a certain level is needed. But after a time, we get so many that we can't do anything. A recent...

Re: HMS Bounty in trouble...

Unfortunately, whenever a bad event happens, or even things not necessarily bad happen but different from what was expected, the response is always new laws and regulations. There were some fatal...

Re: HMS Bounty in trouble...

Perhaps even more revealing would be a time plot of track with positions of the hurricane and the Bounty, with windspeed and direction at each ship position. Traditionally, these storms most often...

Re: HMS Bounty in trouble...

As I understand it, the square riggers needed to run with the wind and generally couldn't beat into the wind very well. There have been numerous questions as to why Bounty went from a SE course to...

I'm hesitant to comment because my experience was a long time ago and procedures and techniques change over time. However, I believe that the exact course that the ship will take is (at least was)...

Re: Yanmar 3GM30F HP one-hour rating (??)

The Yanmar 3G30F is in my boat, and was used in many of the Catalina 320's. It is regarded and advertised as a 27 hp engine.

Would it be possible to completely disengage the windvane rudder so that it merely trails in the water? If so, it should rotate freely to swing to minimize forces by coming...
