Re: Is flying a pirate flag lame?

Whoa Paulo,
I was referring to the pirate flag - I have no general view on art teachers!

Re: Is flying a pirate flag lame?

Easy question. Yes, it's lame - supremely lame...

Re: Fishing

Hi Mark
The words 'ultra-light' and 'sailboat-fishing' should never be used in the same sentence!
But you don't need expensive, complicated gear - and you can see exactly how to go about it at...

Re: What's your biggest bonehead move sailing?

I can't believe that anyone has done anything more stupid than this:~

Re: Looking for blog posts by/about new liveaboards, or those about to move aboard

Not a blog, but a website article about living on a sailboat (http://www.sailboat-cruising.com/living-on-a-sailboat.html). You might find some useful stuff there...

Re: Lash Me To The Mast Before I Buy A Boat!

Of course you'll have to buy it, just so you can suffer like the rest of us...

Re: Battery Sizing - am I crazy?

My suggestion is to go back to first principles and calculate your daily 12v requirements, take account of your onboard charging facilities (engine alternator, and maybe solar panels and wind...

Re: VHF Radio in the cockpit

Point taken, but in that situation the radio would have to wait if I was on my tod. But my days of single-handed sailing are behind me, so my crew would deal with the radio. It would probably be one...

Re: VHF Radio in the cockpit

VHF extension speakers in the cockpit are worth having. As long as you can hear you're being called it's no big deal to go below to answer it.

Re: Question for those who sail cutters

I don't see the point of flying a staysail with a genoa as all the staysail does is steal wind from the genoa. On Alacazam we use a yankee/staysail combination which works just fine, and the high-cut...

Re: Jib furler is hard to furl since putting up new sail...ideas?

My guess is that it's something to do with the new furling line...

Could it be binding on the drum?
Do you need to change the alignment of it as it enters the drum?
Have you missed out one of...

Re: Mooring vs slip?

My preference would be the mooring providing it's a swinging mooring, and not a trot mooring where you have to pick up both a bow line and a stern line. They can be a real pain to pick up in strong...

Re: Staysail: Purpose and trimming

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the C&C is a cutter per se? If that's the case, then what you have is a temporary inner forestay that can be used for a storm jib and maybe a staysail to be...

Re: Couples living aboard how goes the relationship

I've recently written a page on my website on the risks and rewards of living aboard which includes the issue regarding personal relationships. At the risk of breaking the forum rules here's a link...

Re: rope & wire halyards vs all rope halyards

Just one more thing to think about...
Are the sheaves of large enough diameter for the hi-tec line?
This stuff doesn't like to be bent through a tight radius.
Might be worth having a word with...

Re: Can anybody tell if if this interior layout has a name?

I don't see much wrong with it as an in-harbour berth, but it would be useless on passage. Head down on one tack and head up one the other, neither of which make for a decent kip. For an illustrated...

Re: Anchor chain size & length

I would say that 40 feet of 5/16 chain and 150 feet of warp is fine for your Contessa, providing you don't anchor in more than 30ft of water. It's generally accepted that a scope:depth ratio of 6:1...
