Re: Sail Track Lubricant

I use McLube because I have it onboard but the best performance came after my sail guy put on Superlube. That lasted much longer than the mclube too.

The tailer needs to pull slightly upwards too.

Another trick is for the grinder to spin the drum while the tailer is still in action.

We routinely load three wraps on our winches, two in 12...

Re: Main halyard clutch, line slippage

How did the teeth look? You could be nearing a clutch rebuild. These are straightforward but potentially expensive and depending on your clutch setup you may need to invest some time dismantling...

Re: Downeaster 38 , Fast Passage 39 , Valiant 40

I enjoyed sailing my DE38 Cutter but upwind in low wind conditions was a slog. She would reverse in some level of control from about 2knots and up but I have to admit that switching to a fin keel ...

Re: Mainsail twist & traveller position

If you don't have leech telltales buy a set, they're cheap and make a big difference.

Basic starting point I use with new main trimmers is boom on the centerline and the tail end of the top batten...

Re: Where do the costs of a bigger boat come from?

Every single line, shackle and block on the boat gets more expensive. I guess the price goes up with the volume of material used and that's cubed not linear, or squared in the case of paints,...

To clarify - and I think my understanding of the rule is pretty solid now.

This is at a windward mark to be left to port with the next mark a leeward mark.

Port tack boat tacks at the mark to...

My reading is that that backs up my response above. I'm just trying to verify that I'm not boxed into a mental corner here thinking that gaining a late overlap on a tacker inside the zone is fine and...

Re: Rule 18.3

That is a good blog - I've been there before.

My interpretation of 18.3, apprently not shared by all hence the question here, is:

Is the starboard tacker entitled to room despite being clearly...

Rule 18.3

Question for you rules people!

Port tack boat inside the zone crosses clean in front of a starboard tack boat right on the edge of the zone (possibly outside). She then bears down to the mark...

Re: What Would You Do?

So - you've probably got a lot more experience than me, but what I have got leads me to not put a boat in my backyard with a plan for it to stay for a few years. Right now I have a 9' RIB in my...

Or a pair of soft shackles. Though if you're not looking to change sails on the fly the larks head should work fine, but I haven't tried MultiHullGirl's suggestion and it looks pretty neat...

One product I've found is Orange Off. Ordered but not yet tried. Have used acetone in a few spots so far but really trying to minimize its use and make sure it gets washed off pretty quickly.

Lol...

Hylalon without Toluene (California)

Hi All,

I recently bought a 10 year old 9' Caribe. It's seen a lot of use but has been reasonably kept and seems fundamentally sound, I'm putting in a little elbow grease to try and restore it to...

I was happy with the Victron I installed in my last boat and also the linklite I installed in my current boat.

Re: Marina unplugged my dock cord and damaged my boat

No to ice storms and the ocean water is over 60 right now, haven't lost power for more than 24 hours in eight years of ownership here that I know of. When the boat is out of town I leave it prepared...

Re: I got a sailboat for my birthday.

You'll be happy with a sailboat on a lake and 16' is big enough for camping trips, lazy picnics and trailering to other lakes. If you can find a friend who knows how to sail for some on the water...

Re: How do you start from nothing?

You don't need to join a club to crew on a boat sailing out of it. Once on a boat learnt to do one thing well and keep your eyes peeled on everything around you. Even if racing isn't for you this...

My only destinations at the moment are for racing deliveries, and while they tend to be lovely I love the delivery sail with the ocean and it's dolphins, whales and flying fish, more.

When the...

Re: Single-handed tips and tricks

My feeling is I want to move my jacklines further inboard. Downwind in particular the high side isn't so high, upwind with the boat heeled things feel a bit safer (sticking to the high side).

As...
