Re: Light air/Downwind sail choices

For a cruising boat Code 0's are generally a terrible idea. There are some out there that can use them to effect, but a code zero is an upwind beating spinnaker that induces a lot of loads on the...

Re: Light air/Downwind sail choices

Most cruising sailors think a code 0 is a downwind sail when it is not. A true Code 0 has a usable range from about 60 true to 90* true. That's it. Above that you should be using a jib. Period.

A...

Re: Sailboat interior seaworthy design

Just my humble opinion on a 'seaworthy' interior design.

The interior should be so designed such that one can go forward or aft, etc. during a 'viscous' seastate ..... and always has a...

Re: Pontos Winches

Overdrive winches are just so much fun. Sadly winches just never seem to wear out so its hard to justify upgrading. But if you are willing to splurge self tailing winches in good shape generally sell...

Re: Red over Green Navigation Light

Agreed.

Well that is just wrong. I've seen it also, but it isn't right and certainly not within the Rules.

Cruise ships are often the same. You have to admit you know they are there....

Re: Red over Green Navigation Light

I think this is right on the money. NO solution is perfect. And to reject a solution, particularly one detailed in the COLREGS, simply because it isn't perfect is just plain silly.

On a recent...

Re: Red over Green Navigation Light

I think you are over reacting. The masthead/steaming light on most sailboats is obscured over a very wide angle while motorsailing. The sidelights are often obscured periodically in a seaway.

Red...

Re: Red over Green Navigation Light

If this little conversation has done nothing else it has reinforced my suspicions about the quality of instructors at sailing schools. I don't doubt that some of them are pretty good, but this thread...

Re: How will nanotechnology improve sailboats and sailing?

OK, so if it pushes water out of the way, will it do so until the boat hits the bottom? You have to think about such things.

Do you put holiday lights in the rigging?

If so, post a photo! Caution - if you have an interesting light scheme, I may plagiarize it for next year!

Re: Red over Green Navigation Light

I'm sure he meant two greens and 2 reds, not one of each.

I'm shocked to see a sailing instructor stating; "IMHO this whole thread is pointless-waste-of-energy for no particular purpose."

Re: Red over Green Navigation Light

I rarely sail without having a reef taken in, so obstruction of the green lights is seldom an issue.

We memorize the same mnemonic for a master's license: "red over green, sailing machine." Any...

Re: VHF mounting advice

Is it safe to assume that "masthead whip antenna mounted against the port side of my mast" means a conventional 'L' bracket near the top of the mast so the whip extends above the masthead. Anchor...

Re: Red over Green Navigation Light

The problem with masthead tricolor lights is that their 'power'/lumens is usually only to the MINIMUM visibility for CG approved lighting. Its really hard to find BULBS, especially in low amps draw...
