for the OP, I'd certainly just go with the pole you are looking at. It has a straight spike at the end which you just run through the clew, no clipping in necessary....

A tabernacle would work as well and give you a pretty easy way to lower the mast. Just cut those three bits off the bottom of the new mast step and mount the tabernacle. Done.
