Thanks for the input guys, unfortunately for multi-week passages in the PNW (where I mostly sail) a hard dodger is a safety necessity. It just gets too cold even though we wear Mustang GoreTex...

Thanks everyone, I really enjoy the debate, very helpful. I think we'll end up following everyone's advice: there is a small lake (1.1 km≤) really close to where we live, and there is a dinghy club....
