Re: Dominica

another good thing about dominica - you dont need to clear out if you stay less than two weeks. They give you your outward clearance when you clear in. You only need to go back if you change crew...

Re: Caribbean 1500

Re: Considering a foam luff on a 150 LP cruising sail

here's another vote for a 140 with a foam luff. It rolls up to a 115 or so and still works pretty well. I have a 110 for spring/fall sailing. It is easy to say "just change sails" but with only me...

Re: Theft-proofing your tender and outboard...

When we went to the Windwards and Leewards we crisscrossed our outboard with masking tape and spray painted it with magenta, orange and yellow engine paint. Came out looking sort of plaid. Very...

Re: Entry level AIS?

If you sail at night or in congested areas it is really good to have a transponder. You will be amazed at how much more relaxed you can be when you actually know what those lights out there are and...

Re: Entry level AIS?

AIS is the best thing since GPS. The big ships now know where I am because I show up on their screen and an alarm sounds if they are going to run me down. That lets them call me by name on the VHF....

Re: Liferafts and other survival equipment

you are more likely to be close to an airplane than a ship in the middle of the ocean. having air hailing frequencies on an aeronautical handheld might be way more useful than marine if you are...

Re: Main anchor question.

Poly is also useful as a warp to get out of a dock. When you double it and then pull it off the piling when you are headed in the right direction you dont have to worry that it will sink and foul...

Re: Plumbing two fuel tanks

I have two tanks and solved the problem by plumbing the extra tank to go to the main tank. I always fill the main tank from the extra (unless both are empty) and fill the extra from the deck fill. ...

Re: Vibram "FiveFingers" shoes

two points

1. Dont wonder whether you look silly in them. You do.

2. I have been told by people wearing them that they create their own little ecosystem in there. Better to wear tevas like...

Re: What stops Americans cruising the world?

When my wife and I slowly sailed down the chain from Tortola to the Grenadines we noticed that the proportion of US boats went down steadily as we went further south. The VI's were very heavily...

Re: Advice on Clearing in and Out of the Leeward Islands

a correction about Anguilla

People often cite Anguilla as very expensive - Actually it is FREE if you anchor in Road Bay and stay there. It is hideously expensive if you want to go elsewhere.

2. Print out this thread in case your...
