Re: Balsa cored hulls

I was responding to the comment that cored hulls were not a good, or as good as cored hulls. I felt the comment was nonsense comparing apples with oranges. I responded in kind.

The purpose of a...

Re: Balsa cored hulls

That depends on the hull. Would you rather have a typical solid glass hull that is 1/4" or 5/16" thick, or a cored hull with 3/8" balsa sandwiched between glass with a total thickness of two inches?

Re: heeling free kite rig inventor introducing himselves

He can't tack upwind with a kite. It is a down wind sail.

You might want to change that block to one with a swivel in it, so that line runs freely and not chafing.

Re: MISSION: West Coast to Hawaii

I have done many deliveries. If you are looking for a captain I am available. What kind of boat is it? And it is not clear where you are starting from and going to.

Re: Transpac newbie, advice?

Two man watches? I've done that once in nasty conditions crossing the gulf stream, and another time in the med as mate, and I thought it was silly and exhausting. it was really one man watches with...

Re: Good sleeping bag for sailing

I may know your from the ASA forums ten years back. Are you the Seahag living down in the Annapolis area? I recall you had a wooden boat and were one of those guaranteed a spot in heaven for all...

Re: Transpac newbie, advice?

I'll try to clean it up, it is not that well written IMHO. I will try to organize into one document and see if I missed anything. I will use it myself so I don't have to brief my crews. I...

Re: Transpac newbie, advice?

One thing I try to avoid is a sleeping bag. Even on the winter trips south, I leave it home. I figure it is only two days and then shorts and Tshirts, so why bring one? I'd rather have long johns...

Re: Don Casey: Paint Waterline Stripe with Bottom Paint

That sound like a fine idea. Are you using ablative paint? or hard paint?

Re: Balsa cored hulls

A 20 year old boat would weight twice as much, wouldn't it? As for newer boats--

Re: CDI Furler jams

Hey Brent,

I just noticed the signature. I want to complement you. I've read a bit on your Origami techniques years ago and it is a fantastic concept.

So your aluminum tube has a slot cut in...

Re: CDI Furler jams

I didn't make that joke up. It does fit rather well for a poorly made boat designed to appeal to those that don't know better. What other small sailboat carries a 50 hp outboard--5HP is more...

Re: Don Casey: Paint Waterline Stripe with Bottom Paint

Same color as the bottom paint? Or something different to keep the boot stripe look?

I've seen people paint over their boot stripes with the bottom paint they use on the bottom. These are...

Ok Jack,

I can guess CYA is Candian Yachting Association.

I have been working in the industry for more than 40 years and never heard of this one. ISPA

Here is what I found online.

Re: hylas

Most likely the prop. I bet it has a Flexifold. The motor forward great but don't back worth a damn.

Re: Universal Atomic Diesel Starter Motor Removal

I just changed a starter on a fairly new Yanmar. It was on tight. I used a block of wood as a beater board and a hammer, and it loosened right up. They do freeze on there.

Re: Balsa cored hulls

You know the expression, "I drive it like I stole it"? That is how Open 60's skippers sail those boats. I seriously doubt rig tension would be the problem. Slamming the relatively flat hull on...

Re: Finding free anchorages on East Coast?

We are losing our freedom here bit by bit. Some places will not allow your to anchor, or you will need a lawyer to represent you if you want to fight it. Harbor cops are mostly fools with no...

Re: Finding free anchorages on East Coast?

The best spot is that moveable seawall down in Stamford. Where I was the docks started floating off the tops of the piles, and I was in a protected area. My dock was and still is damaged.

Re: NJ Coast

The problem with finding a place while passing up the New Jersey coast is you'd need detailed planning to catch slack water. Which a good navigator can do. But from my perspective there is nothing...

Re: Finding free anchorages on East Coast?

I am frequently shocked by the lack of experience people have with anchoring. I taught one couple how to anchor and recommended they practice frequently--every time they went out. When asked back...

Universal Atomic Diesel Starter Motor Removal

Beat on it. It will come off. I would use a pie e of 2x4 and a hammer.
