Re: Tips for installing radar reflector to backstay?

I seized a small block to the stay and hoisted the reflector to it. The problem that developed was the reflector twisting and eventually chafing through the halyard. problem solved by seizing an old...

Re: My vision

As a DAV myself I applaud your effort. My only real problem nowadays is accessing VA services. Something to think about if you intend sailing far and wide with a DAV crew.

Re: Need Passage Routing Advice-San Diego to Seattle

Patience is a cardinal virtue for sailors; especially cruisers. If you have to wait a few months for the right conditions, you wait, or suffer the consequences.

Re: Need Passage Routing Advice-San Diego to Seattle

We have never tried the coastal route going North but on our way South in September of 2010 we encountered two other cruisers heading the opposite direction who gave up and left their boats in Eureka...

Re: Need Passage Routing Advice-San Diego to Seattle

Starting in San Diego for Seattle I would certainly go by way of Hawaii. The prevailing winds along the coast mean it would be a beat all the way in some very challenging conditions. Going by way...

Re: What issues what State

A lot of talk about avoiding taxes on this thread. It seems to me that if one has chosen to live where there are high taxes, one presumably reaps the benefits of the services those taxes pay for. ...

Re: What issues what State - Just FYI

It is probably out of the question for you but Alaska has no sales or property taxes and sailboats are dirt cheap (Because sails are pretty useless up here) We have seen several sailboat hulls...

Re: tiller pilots: simrad or raymarine????

Late to the thread but I thought I would add my 2 cents worth:

Our first Raymarine ST2000+ experienced an electronic failure on the third day of our first voyage from Hawaii, prompting us to...

Re: How does spending an extra 50,000 on a boat cost

The more you spend on the boat, the less you will have for your cruising budget and emergency fund and the more severe your loss of you lose the boat. With a less inexpensive boat and reserves...

Re: Two weeks all alone what to expect?

Fifteen years ago while looking at a property which we later purchased, standing in the middle of the forty acre parcel my wife, disappointed, remarked "You can hear the freeway." I said "I don't...

Re: Two weeks all alone what to expect?

We were once socked in by fog in mid-Pacific with 100 ft or less visibility for a week. After a few days we started to imagine we were in a Stephen King novel.

Re: My boat was boarded (and messed with) at anchor!

We spent three and a half years in the PNW. I took Williwa down the inside passage (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLYi0ZDWfmQxHFUVo16vwHLd-uSiQposEP) last summer and cruised the Gulf...

Re: Deck/Lifeline storage?

Works fine as long as you never encounter bad weather.

Yes, I know, a lot of people do it. We have all seen cruisers setting off on a voyage with a dozen jerry cans and a couple of kayaks lashed...

Re: 218 yr old USS Constitution is getting a refit

Last time I was in Boston, sometime in the nineties I think, she was stripped down for a major overhaul. Some of the original solid timbers were being replaced with laminated beams. Seems they...

Re: Cruising Gear

You are correct, of course. In fact, too little wind is far more common than too much wind at sea and if the wind pipes up and you have sea room you can always just take everything down and wait. A...

Re: Cruising Gear

Apparently, some people think refrigeration is more important than storm sails.

Amusing.

Of course, there is nothing more useless than storm sails on a marina queen or day sailer and...
