Re: Wrapping a Steering Wheel

I think it the paracord is nylon, since that's what's available online cheap. It has tightened over time.

Re: Small DIY Swim Platform

It's an old pic. We have the hailing port below the platform.

Re: Small DIY Swim Platform

The best part of the setup is how easy it is to get in and out of the dinghy. The dinghy slips under the platform, which allows us to get in and out by sitting on the edge of the platform. It's...

Re: Small DIY Swim Platform

Here's a pic of our swim platform folded up. I can't take any credit for it, except for choosing to buy a boat with the platform. The step cut into the transom adds to the convenience.

Re: Small DIY Swim Platform

Here's a pic of our fold-up swim platform. It's bigger than yours, but I think it would work just as well in a smaller scale. The ladder is similar to the one Faster posted. You can see one of the...

Re: SW Ontario - Winter cover

Yes, it should be possible. I reworked a cover from another boat to fit mine. The first season I was short on time so I cut the cover and sewed and taped it closed where necessary. The following...

Re: Is Sailing Sexist?

I believe the number of girls is rising, but there is still has a long way to go. At a recent high school robotics competition I counted 10 girls out of 40 team leaders, and of the top 24 teams my...

Re: Wrapping a Steering Wheel

Just to set the record straight, my post is from a woman. Not that that changes the men/women ratio of posters much.

Re: Wrapping a Steering Wheel

I posted this project in the low-bucks project thread, and am happy to repeat it here.

The leather wrap on our wheel had seen better days. I searched online and in books for an easy, good-looking...

Re: Going up the mast

Yes, a camera is key. Take lots of pictures from lots of angles. That way, you might have answers to questions you think of later.

Our daughter likes going up the mast. We've been known to have...

Re: I need a tool....

Our boat came with exactly what you're looking for. Searching for t-handle deck plate key, I found that they are cast in China. I have no idea where you could purchase one. Perhaps, seeing the pic,...

Re: Need Opinion: Chart plotter, north up or course up?

Our radar is ancient and at the nav station. Eventually we'll upgrade and integrate. Until then, navigation in the fog requires two people.

Re: Need Opinion: Chart plotter, north up or course up?

I go with a combination. On the left, I keep a wide view N-up to give me a sense of where I am in the world. On the right I keep a close view course-up to show what's in the immediate vicinity. ...

Re: Sandal-type Boat Shoes

Yes, Keens have very generous kids' sizing. A kid 6 fits my daughter's women's size 7 1/2 perfectly, at a huge discount from the adult pricing.

I live in my chacos whenever there's no snow on the...

Re: Low buck projects- Let's see 'em!

Ritchard -- Great job on the table!

The knotting technique for the wheel couldn't be simpler. As you can see from the photos, a series of slip knots creates the braided look. We pulled each knot...

Re: Low buck projects- Let's see 'em!

A couple recent low-bucks projects:

I was tired of tying a tarp over the pedestal. The pedestal cover project used about 3/4 yard of Sunbrella I had left over. It was just barely enough for the...

Re: can I afford to continue sailing

Reading into your OP. "I'm sure i went out 25 or more times" Are you sailing alone, with out your wife and kids? " I dont make a lot of money but we arent poor either." Is she with the kids 24/7?...

Re: Living aboard - and sex

To us "boat yoga" describes the odd and uncomfortable positions necessary to reach whatever needs to be repaired on the boat. I'll have to be careful using that term without context, lest I be...

Re: Winter under a tarp

Yes, I mean the Hylas 47. It is quite a bit of shrinkwrap (less than your 54 would use), but rolled and folded it all fits in my wagon.

Since I can't cover the painted topsides with shrinkwrap,...

Re: Winter under a tarp

Shrinkwrap doesn't have to be tossed each spring. I used the same shrinkwrap for 3 winters before switching to a hand-me-down canvas cover. I still have the shrinkwrap cover stored, just in case.

Re: Bug Screens

As suggested in the Low Bucks Projects thread, I bought a gazebo screen to put over my bimini. Cheap, easy to throw on, and it turns the cockpit into a bug-free screen room. Low bucks project -...

Re: Replacing V berth foam material

If buying at JoAnn Fabrics, there are almost always coupons available for 40% off any single non-sale item. Makes a big difference.
