Re: Mounting instruments in cockpit bulkhead

If the cutout holes will be visible inside the boat when finished, I dislike jigsaws because the holes they cut never quite look perfect unless you've had a lot of practice. I've cut a large hole for...

Re: Computer Upgrade

A correctly setup and configured Linux install is far more bullet proof than any older windows install in my experience. One of the problems with OpenSource products in general is that propriety...

Re: Computer Upgrade

Re: Welding Hobie 16 corner casting

They'd be an aluminium casting. Aluminium was extensively arc welded in the old days using rods that had a flux that looked like wet salt.

Re: Bow rail bend fix

Most all metal work hardens when deformed. 300 grade stainless's are one of the more dramatic due to austenitic structure (hence why "annealed" tube is usually used for fabrication involving...

Re: Bow rail bend fix

This. Stainless steel work hardens so buckles and kinks are near impossible to make good other than to bash the rest of the structure back into shape. I've used a press with custom made angle iron...

I've got the elite version which is just a chartplotter. It has a habit of rebooting itself occasionally, and it doesn't show some info from the same chart chip that shows on the Zeuss, but overall...

Re: lowrance elite five gold question

We have both a 10 foot aluminium hard and 9 foot inflatable RIB. Use the hard dinghy way more than the inflatable. Here's my take on the pros and cons:

Re: Stainless Steel Quality

Austinetic stainless i.e. 316 can be work hardened which can cause it to become partially magnetic. Martensitic stainless (like cutlery, knife blades) is slightly magnetic. Softer ferritic stainless...

Re: best repair for stripped thread in the boom

I've used helicoils on the mast no problem. Lube with tefgel. They'll break the bolt before unscrewing. Don't ask me how I know!

Re: Is a 32' Sailboat Over-sized for a Beginner?

32 feet won't give you very good feedback. Smaller boats will talk to you and let you know when you've "hit the groove" - that point where the boat lifts it's skirt and starts to boogey - much...
