Re: Mainsail Replacement Quotes and 3 Choices

Give Dirk at National Sail in FL. a call. Excellent sails, great advice and service, and the prices are very reasonable. I've bought two RF headsails from them and wouldn't consider anywhere else...

Re: Recreational Sailboat vs. Tugboat with Barge: Who Has the Right of Way? - See mor

You just need to look carefully between the lines in the Colregs, you'll find it.

Re: Recommendations for an anchor washdown pump

I'm a big fan of the Shurflo Blaster. I used to use them on heavy equipment for dust suppression systems. They would run all day long, several hours dry, and last much longer than they had any...

Re: Yanmar 3GM oil line failure

I don't have a part number unfortunately but IIRC we found a parts diagram online with the part number.

Re: Race to Alaska/R2ak

They start from Port Townsend, WA and the first leg is to cross the strait of Juan de Fuca to Victoria, BC. Those that successfully complete the first leg qualify to continue to AK.

Re: Race to Alaska/R2ak

Wrist- no joke. Lots of teams gearing up for this race. $10,000 first prize, set of steak knives second prize. Some really innovative vessels set to enter, it's going to be interesting to see what...

Re: Single handed docking...

Sheesh Med, with that slip just line it with big fenders on both sides and a huge one at the end and just drive the boat into it until it stops :-))
We have a dedicated spring line that we leave...

Re: Yanmar GM30 Hard to start

Our last boat (my brother's current boat) had the same engine and the same starting difficulty. It never fired right up even when new, but did gradually get worse. Different throttle positions made...

Re: Dead engine hour meter

How about you supply the sauna and I supply the beer:D We're going to be taking some shorter trips this summer but in between we'll be at Blakely, if you get close by stop in, it would be fun.

Re: Dead engine hour meter

Get a Hobbs meter, install it, make a note in your maintenance log book and don't worry about it anymore.

Re: Mooring pendants

Your 5500lb anchor should be more than enough, our 6000lb concrete anchor has held various boats up to 40'/23,000lbs for many years here in the San Juan Islands (relatively protected but subject to...

Re: Winch covers--are they worth it?

I have covers, never use them. PNW, lots of fresh water rinses, not much sun.

Re: Buying sails on line or from a local shop

Well, I'll go against the majority here and recommend National Sails in Florida (Rolly Tasker Sails). We have bought two, both offshore RF headsails, and couldn't be happier with the fit, quality,...

Re: Rusting lifeline - what to do?

Easiest way to replace them is to PM Knothead (I think he is still around?) here on SN, send him your old lifelines in a USPS flat rate box and he'll send you new ones. Top notch quality and...

Re: Lewmar Windlass headache!

Ours is the same as the one in the youtube video, there is a C clip in a groove at the bottom of the shaft. I don't see a groove or any kind of retaining clip on yours though.

Re: Preventing chafe of rode on bow cleat...

Is this your anchor rode, or a mooring/dock line? I also use used fire hose for chafe guard like Capta and it works great. It looks like the loop is wearing from rotating around the base of the...

Re: Is there an in and out for the coolant hoses to water heater?

IIRC (it's been several years) the outlet near the circulating pump is the "out", so that would be the "in" on the heater. I don't think it really matters though.

Re: Yanmar 3GM oil line failure

arf145- yep, that's the one. Ours failed at the second bend to the left of your arrow, after the fitting. The replacement line that we installed was a copper material whereas the original was steel...

Re: Spacing & how many mast steps?

Denise- I've never installed steps but had steps on our previous boat. I think you should start at the top - figure out how far down from the top of the mast you want the two steps to be (essential...

Re: What is the most idiotic mistake you have made on a boat?

In no particular order, but equal in stupidity:
"The weather looks bad, but I really need to get there today"...
"I know the entrance to this harbor, I'm sure I can cut this corner"...
"I know...
