weeping keel bolts

A day after I got my Westerly Longbow - 31 feet, fin keel - back in the water I noticed that my bilges were rather full. Having gone through an exhaustive tracking process I now suspect my forward...

rash decision: applying gelcoat

Some time ago members of this group were kind enough to advise me on a rash of hard little blisters that appeared on my topsides.

And the boat wasn''t too good either....

I rubbed them down,...

Simpson Lawrence gone? Windlass advice, please...

S-L went out of business. You can get parts from most decent chandler''s. Yacht Parts, Plymouth (UK) tel +44 1752 252489 have a fair stock.

Bainbridge International seem to have taken over S-L''s...

bearing my soul

Thanks, Constantin.

I''ve now tested the windlass a bit more. It hauled up a 35lb anchor and 70 feet of chain without breaking sweat today - but still just clonked when I tried to lower the...

bearing my soul

I''ve just changed the clutch bearing at the end of the motor shaft on my 12V anchor windlass.

I''ve tested the windlass, but not under load. It winds up (i.e. in anchor retrieving mode), but...

no winch situation

Does anyone happen to know the name/type/spec/id number of the brushes in
the electric motor on my Simpson Lawrence 900 Horizon anchor windlass?

The motor is a 12V 600W output, 750W input.

The...

Can I do this?

Having just about reassembled the mechanical side of my Horizon 900 windlass I want to test it before I put it back on board. Can I just connect the leads to a battery for this purpose? Or should the...

Propeller coating

We''ve always antifouled our prop but this year we listened to those who warn against such practices. We cleaned and polished the prop and lowered it naked and sparkling into the water.

That was...

Horizon 900 windlass

My Horizon 900 windlass has refused to raise or lower my anchor. I''ve established that it''s a mechanical fault.

Rather than hurl this beast into the sea I decided to strip it down and try to...

leaving valves open

If your valves are really hard to open and close you need to overhaul them. I did mine last week. It didn''t take long - I was able to fix the problem between tides while tied uo to piles in the...

proposing to paint prop

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions. I''ve decided to give the prop a season au naturel, if that''s the way it''s spelt.
I''ll let you know what happens at the next haulout.
The interference...

seacock difficulties

I''ve just reinstalled a Blake''s seacock, having ground it in to a reasonable finish and applied plenty of silicone grease.

Try as I may I cannot seem to adjust the retaining plate properly. If...

Diesel in the bilge

I had a similar problem the other day. After I had mopped up as thoroughly as possible I sprinkled talcum powder over the affected areas, left it for a day, then swept up. A vacuum cleaner would be...

proposing to paint prop

Duane

According to my wife, definitely offensive.

I''ll give your suggestion a try. Actually, though, this was just a phenomenon I observed when cleaning the prop. I''m really more concerned...

proposing to paint prop

I don''t know about my electric magnetic personality, but I am fairly wiry, I''ve been consistently overcharged by an assortment of ship''s chandlers and my best friend''s a conductor.

Your turn.

proposing to paint prop

I''ve just cleaned layers of antifouling and general gunk off my prop and managed to get it to shine pretty well.

I am now wondering whether or not to repaint the prop. The stuff I''ve used on my...

small blisters

If you''ve got a lot of them, like a rash, you should deal with them. This would probably mean having the gelcoat taken off, leaving the hull to dry out then having a new gelcoat applied.

Don...

epoxy paint advice, please

Thanks, Big Red, for clearing up one or two misconceptions about what paint can and can''t do. I won''t paint the hull.

I''m not sure about your interesting idea of putting teflon patches on the...

epoxy paint advice, please

Is there such a thing as a paint, suitable for topsides, which would reinforce the gelcoat AND compensate for areas which have been rubbed down and are slightly thinned as a result?

Thanks

update: moisture trapped between two gelcoat layers

I finally tried rubbing down those little blisters with fine grade wet and dry. The great majority just rubbed out!

Unfortunately, a few on the very lowest part of the topsides (almost a misnomer)...

Thanks for the advice on osmotic blisters and women.

I''m going to rub them down.

I think I''ll do the same to the blisters.

My Westerly Longbow has a rash of small blisters on the topsides, just above the waterline. They are hard and won''t pierce.

I am told that she developed these as a result of being overloaded and...
