Re: What doesn't kill you....

Thanks for the write up. Sounds scary and hairy, but you got through it and that's what counts!

I agree about your thoughts on getting a larger anchor, better anchor, and/or more rode. FWIW...

Re: Daytime anchor ball

I recall that Lyn and Larry Pardey told a cautionary tale in one of their books on the issue. I believe it was "self sufficient sailor" or "cost concious cruiser" but it could have been any of the...

Re: Pros and cons of steel sailboats

That's great news. For as much as I enjoy piling on at times and giving Brent a hard time, and as much as I am genuinely concerned about the lack of technical design theory that he is willing to...

Re: We have fallen for the Cheoy Lee 40 Offshore

Of course! Doesn't take much arm twisting to get me to drink beer and talk about boats! ;)

Re: Battery Acid!

Thanks for the warning. I was aware of the Hydrogen off-gassing but that is seemingly replaced easily enough with H2O. I was wondering if the acid itself gasses off with time, though from an...

Re: Powering hot water heater with dedicated 12v

Be aware that if it's mounted below, it's not ABYC compliant and your surveyor will have a seizure when he/she sees it. Basically it's a big carbon monoxide risk. Propane, when completely combusted...

Re: Powering hot water heater with dedicated 12v

Not what you asked for, but it could be an option. Portable cheap on demand propane heater. Plumb it to a big tank and leave the unit outside (because of CO concerns).

Coleman - Hot Water On...

Re: Daytime anchor ball

I love using my anchor ball. I get a certain kind of smug pleasure out of being the only one around that is sesmanlike enough yo use it around here.

Of course after years of doing this and feeling...

Re: Boat almost sunk, not mine

Ahhh... makes sense.

If I were to do this, I'd have to idiot proof it by attaching the engine key to the plug.

Re: We have fallen for the Cheoy Lee 40 Offshore

A fully battened main can be a secret weapon in light air. It holds its shape waiting to make efficient use of a zephyr whereas a main with partial battens needs the strength of the zephyr to fill...

Re: Battery Acid!

This brings another question to mind. Is the liquid that gasses off components of water only and is it perfectly replaced by adding water or is some of the electrolyte perminantly lost with...

Re: Shameless plug

Now that I own a boat with lots of freeboard, I'm curious what effect it has on performance. I know it can be a liability when reducing windage under severe conditions, but I've always wondered if...

Re: Pros and cons of steel sailboats

Hellosailor, a member here, seems to know a thing or two about sandblasting. He has talked about a dry ice blaster which works as well as sand, but the media evaporates so there is no cleanup. ...

Re: harness and tether

You mentioned owning a climbing harness, so I'm going to assume that you know enough about climbing to tie some knots and work with rope. If anything in this post is confusing, don't try it at home....

Re: Anchoring under sail

I've anchored under sail in my 31ft wooden boat, and in my 41ft heavy fiberglass boat. Neither time was planned or voluntary. ;)

I've tried using both sails, and I've tried main only. Main only...
